Primary Purpose of Position

Primarily instruction and public service and those forms of research which promote and enhance the college's commitment to excellence in instruction and which supports the current needs of the students and faculty. Faculty members are responsible to the Dean or Program Manager. The relationship of the faculty member to the student is one of leader, teacher, adviser and facilitator of learning.

This is a 9 month position

Essential Job Duties

The instructor will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Advising students;

  • Maintaining office hours;

  • Assisting with registration;

  • Serving on College committees;

  • Developing curriculum;

  • Maintaining professional competence;

  • Participation in professional development activities.

Additional Responsibilities when Teaching

  • Maintain annually updated course syllabi and provide each student with a written statement of course requirements at the beginning of the semester including texts, course content and competencies and evaluation.

  • Prepare course materials; use appropriate teaching techniques including delivering lectures, leading discussions and conducting laboratory demonstrations; and perform other activities, which are related to and meet the requirements of the courses.

  • Conduct evaluations of student performance and assign grades on the basis of such evaluations.

  • Maintain records of student attendance and grades according to college and state policy and procedure.

  • Maintain posted office hours as required by College policy and procedure and be available for student conferences and tutoring.

  • Responsible for the development and revision of course content, textbook/equipment selection, instructional materials and teaching assignments/scheduling.

  • Responsible for administering student surveys in classes as prescribed by College procedure and discussing results with Dean or Program Manager.

  • Participate in the development and implementation of articulation programs and agreements and promote student participation in such programs.

  • Provide students with academic and career advisement and assistance in transferability as appropriate.

  • Work with students and employers in occupational settings, on-the-job training, practicums, internships and similar work-related situations as needed.

  • Maintain professional skills and subject expertise through continual study and research in discipline and through involvement in professional organizations.

  • Donate academic expertise in the local, state or national community when appropriate to fulfill the community relations goals of the College.

  • Serve on faculty, college and/or University and Community College System of North Carolina committees as appropriate.

  • Support and encourage college-sponsored activities.

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required by Program Manager, Dean and/or VP of Instruction.

  • Learn new guidelines and processes in performing duties and advising students

  • Create a student-centered environment

  • Work toward operational excellence; continuous improvement of processes

  • Implement innovative strategies to meet the needs of students and improve processes

Qualifications

Minimum

Master's degree in Forestry, Fish and Wildlife, or a related Natural Resources discipline. Teaching experience with students having a wide range of learning styles. Ability to teach effectively in the classroom and the field. Having competency in teaching a wide range of "hands-on" natural resources technology courses including dendrology, forest measurements, fire management, soils and hydrology, and GIS/GPS. Willingness to advise student clubs and conduct overnight travel for field trips and club activities. Proven record of timely reporting and completion of paperwork. Willingness to continually train and upgrade skills as workforce needs evolve.

Preferred

Master's degree in Forestry, Fish and Wildlife, or a related Natural Resources discipline. Prior experience teaching natural resources technology courses in a two-year, community/technical college setting. Field experience utilizing the knowledge, skills, and techniques required by natural resources technicians. Competency providing instruction in various courses in both the Forestry and Fish and Wildlife programs of study. Experience using up-to-date geospatial technology and software. Having industry and academic connections that will aid students in job placement and/or transfer to four-year colleges/universities.

Full-time 9-month faculty position teaching 2nd year nursing students Essential Job Duties * Teaching up to 30 contact hours of lecture, laboratory, clinical and/or simulation courses each semester. Teaching load may include day, evening, weekend and online course assignments at main campus and offsite locations including regional clinical partners. * Utilizing high levels of energy, creativity, and motivation to design and implement effective teaching and learning practices. Teaching team-developed and college-approved course objectives in the classroom, lab, clinical facility and simulation. * Facilitating student learning through in-class and out-of-class activities. Engaging students during office hours, tutoring, remediation and mentoring activities. * Communicating all pertinent information regarding policies, objectives, course requirements, evaluation methods, grading system, and any other aspects pertinent to courses/program/college to students and others. * Maintaining accurate, timely records pertaining to student progress and behaviors. * Making appropriate referrals for students experiencing academic, personal, or other problems. * Devoting appropriate time weekly to lecture/lab/clinical/simulation preparation, classroom and clinical assessment, and timely documentation of student performance. * Utilizing Moodle and other educationally-sound technologies to augment courses. * Preparing and conducting student evaluations including transition to practice site visits. * Preparing clinical, hospital, and laboratory schedules for students as requested by director. * Making/approving student assignments and supervising nursing students in clinical settings. * Notifying program director of student issues or variations from policy/procedures. * Assisting with planning, implementation, evaluation and revision of college curriculum. * Contributing to the institution though participation in program and department meetings, and service on college committees and assigned community events. * Collaborating with faculty, staff and students in a diverse and collegial organizational culture with high standards for performance. * Modeling professional communication and behaviors for students. * Remaining current in nursing practice, nursing and clinical education, and trends in community college education through professional development, further education and/or scholarship. * Adhering to the policies and standard practices of Haywood Community College and the North Carolina Community College System, as well as the North Carolina Board of Nursing, clinical partners, and the Region A Nursing Consortium. * Utilizing the appropriate chain of command within Region A Nursing Consortium to report problems and/or progress. * Assuming responsibilities as designated by the Program Director or designee. * Assisting in selection of new equipment and maintaining college and clinical agency property and equipment. Qualifications Minimum: (1) Applicant must hold a current unrestricted license or multi state licensure privilege to practice as a registered nurse in North Carolina; (2) hold a master's degree in nursing (MSN) from a regionally-accredited institution; (3) have two calendar years or the equivalent of full time clinical experience as a registered nurse; (4) meet North Carolina Board of Nursing faculty requirements including preparation in teaching and learning principles for adult education, including curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation, appropriate to assignment within three years of employment; (5) demonstrate excellent written communication and interpersonal skills; (6) demonstrate commitment to the community college philosophy and to teaching traditional and non-traditional students from a variety of backgrounds; (7) maintain competence in the areas of assigned responsibility; and (8) have current knowledge of evidence-based nursing practice for the registered nurse and the licensed practical nurse. Preferred: (1) Master's degree in Nursing Education from a regionally-accredited institution. (2) Significant full-time clinical experience within the last five years as a registered nurse in a medical/surgical setting or related position (i.e. staff nurse, advanced practice nurse). (3) Recent teaching experience in an NCBON-approved and/or nationally-accredited community college nursing program. (4) Experience working with a nursing faculty team to develop and align curricula and assessment plans. (5) Demonstrated experience using instructional technologies, administering computer-based tests, facilitating high-fidelity simulation activities, and utilizing learning management systems such as Moodle or Blackboard. (6) Demonstrated organizational and leadership skills. (7) Ability to develop and maintain effective collaborations with faculty colleagues, college support staff, local healthcare providers, community agencies, and four-year colleges and universities.
