Required Skills

  • Completion of a Scrub Technician Certification Program

  • One to two years experience as a Scrub Tech in multiple specialties

  • Maintains designated certifications such as CPR, as offered by the center

  • General familiarity with medical terminology as it pertains to anatomy and surgical procedures for an operating room

  • Interacts appropriately and effectively with all patients/others regardless of age or ethnic background

  • Demonstrates ability to work as a team member and to communicate directly and professionally

  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care*

We opened our doors in 1998 and began providing cardiovascular services to the people of Central Texas. Since then, our facility, staff and services have grown, and so has our reputation. Our surgical services department consists of 5 Operating Rooms, including 2 state-of-the-art hybrid ORs and 2 dedicated Heart rooms. Our surgeons are not only experts in traditional cardiac surgery techniques but are also on the forefront of emerging technologies to treat the full spectrum of cardiothoracic and vascular conditions. In 2018 we performed 748 Open Heart surgeries, including many complex valve and thoracic procedures. This position requires thorough surgical knowledge and expertise to insure proper instrumentation and supplies are available on the surgical field and/or in the operating room where the procedure is to be performed. This position helps the sterile operative team, performs scrub and circulating duties in the operating room, performs routine and specialized housekeeping activities, and applies principles of asepsis, infection control and medical ethics. This position will also be responsible for training newly assigned personnel. Assumes, under the direction of the Laboratory, responsibility for patient specimen testing, quality control, quality improvement, and equipment maintenance. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES Patient Care * Actively participates in direct patient care and ensures a safe and comforting environment. * Assures that patient equipment and supplies are available and in operating condition. * Performs clinical quality improvement activities such as patient satisfaction, physician satisfaction and staff satisfaction. * Prepares Operating Room and equipment by opening sterile supplies and instrumentation for procedures to be performed. * Demonstrates proficiency to operate and/or apply surgical equipment and instrumentation. * Assumes responsibility to maintain sterile technique and apply principles of infection control and medical ethics. * Functions as Scrub Assistant when needed; is able to assume primary and secondary scrub duties. * Demonstrates proficiency in interpreting patient status information during procedures. * Assists with specific and safe positioning of patient on OR table. * Anticipates needs of the surgeon with little or no prompting. * Interprets and relays physician orders/requests to other team members. * Assists nursing staff with preoperative patient preparation. * Counts sponges, and related items with circulating nurse before and during surgical procedures. * Assists operative team with donning sterile gown/gloves and applying sterile drapes to surgical field. * Cares for surgical specimens on the sterile field. * Maintains sterile field in an organized manner so anyone can utilize at any time during the procedure. * Assists in transportation of patient to OR and/or PACU. * Demonstrates ability to react calmly and effectively in an emergency situation. * Performs Point of Care procedures in a timely manner according to established policy and procedure. Documents required information and complies with all Point of Care quality control standards. Graduate from an accredited educational program for Surgical Technologist. * Licensure/Certification: Valid certificate from Surgical Technologist program OR Has completed an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard of the United States or in the United States Public Health Service. For surgical technologist not meeting the education requirements above: Was employed to practice surgical technology in a health care facility before September 1, 2009 OR Is in the service of the federal government, to the extent the person is performing duties related to that service.
