Front-End Developer and Data Visualization Engineer

We are looking for you, a front-end developer who will use equal parts skill and vision to create interactive visualizations and build user interfaces that deliver functionality and efficiency.

This is an opportunity to contribute to a project that meets challenges in federal government agencies by working with a development team to build an application with user centric design. You'll work with a team of UI/UX designers and back-end developers to create a seamless user experience using technologies like React, Angular, Vue, Django and D3. You will work with the development team to ensure accessibility for all users by developing a front-end that functions across browsers, platforms, and devices while meeting accessibility and security requirements. You Have:

  • 2+ years of experience with using HTML and CSS, including CSS frameworks, such as Bootstrap or Foundation

  • 1+ years of experience with developing front-end applications using JavaScript and a JavaScript framework, including Angular 2, React, and Vue

  • 1+ years of experience creating visualizations using Django and D3

  • Experience with using Agile software development methods in a DevOps environment

  • Experience with usability analysis, testing, and client-facing engagements, including design discussions and product demonstrations

  • Experience with a structured build software, including Gulp, Grunt, or NPM

  • Ability to obtain a security clearance

  • HS diploma or GED

Nice If You Have:

  • Experience with complying to 508 standards for software development a plus

  • Experience in working with large-scale government projects a plus

  • Experience in working with Jasmine, Karma, and Protractor

  • BA or BS degree in CS, Human-Computer Interaction, Web Design, Front End Development, or related field

The right candidate will have a passion for great design and user experiences to help us build engaging interactives and data visualizations that better inform communities and policymakers. The developer will be a key member of a small design team working to communicate complex data, research, and concepts using easily digestible graphics and web interfaces. Good organizational skills and the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical colleagues is a must. New America is home to some of America's leading technologists, and houses original research data on topics as varied as drone technology, financial opportunity, and childcare affordability. We use and contribute to open source libraries and frameworks wherever possible, and we're looking for a developer who will feel at home in this kind of environment. This full-time position is based in Washington, D.C. This is not a remote or telework position. Responsibilities: * Develop front-end interactives, including maps and data visualizations in a high-impact setting * Work with a full-stack developer on front-end development projects on our digital properties, including our main website, Intranet, and various one-off projects * Identify and build out a sustainable platform for creating and developing on-brand, replicable dataviz and interactive tools * Coordinate and track project deliverables based on project timelines established with communications team * Work with New America's programs to understand their data visualization needs and provide advice and support as programs design their data projects * Work with New America's design team to ensure graphics standards are met Qualifications: Candidates for this position should have the following: * 1+ years of professional experience in front-end website development using JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS3 * Ability to communicate clearly and collaborate effectively with clients and internal colleagues * Experience with React * Experience with D3.js * Good design sensibilities (eye for detail and typography) and the ability to work within/expand upon established brand style * Familiarity navigating Sketch, Adobe Illustrator, or Photoshop Bonus skills: * Experience creating interactive data visualizations such as maps and charts * Experience with at least one client or server-side MVC framework * Familiarity with build tools such as Webpack * Experience and interest in working in nonprofits, public policy, research, and/or journalism Application Process: Submit a cover letter, resume and links to portfolios of work and/or GitHub repos.
