This is an 18-month term position from the start date, with the possibility of renewal based on funding and performance.

The Institute for Quantitative Social Science (IQSS) is a university-wide institute whose mission is to solve society's greatest challenges through the creation, preservation, and dissemination of social science knowledge. We build infrastructure and community so social scientists can work at unprecedented speed, scale, and levels of collaboration. The IQSS approach includes: providing an environment (physical space, events, services) that encourages scholars to convene and collaborate; developing powerful (and broadly useful) statistical, computational, and analytical infrastructure and tools; building bridges between the many different scientific communities concerned with real world problems; removing impediments to discovery by providing exceptional administrative services; and supporting and showcasing innovative ideas through the creation and incubation of scientific programs.

The Dataverse Project is an open-source software project that represents the state of the art in open and generalist data repository. It has about 100 installations around the world including the most prominent and well known Harvard Dataverse Repository and an extensive community of users and code contributors.

Harvard Dataverse Repository is a free data repository open to all researchers from any discipline, both inside and outside of the Harvard community, where you can share, archive, cite, access, and explore research data. Since 2012, the Institute for Quantitative Social Science has collaborated with Harvard Library and Harvard University Information Technology (HUIT) to make the Harvard Dataverse Repository openly available to researchers and data collectors worldwide from all disciplines to deposit data. In this collaboration IQSS leads the development of the Dataverse Project.

Position Description

As a member of the development team of the open-source Dataverse Project, the Front End Developer will be actively involved in the technical design and implementation of various components of the front end of the Single Page Application Dataverse. Although this developer should be able to work on all aspects of the Dataverse code, the main focus will be on the development and enhancement of the Dataverse frontend using the technologies in use, such as React, Java Server Faces, etc., and work on the migration from the old to the new Dataverse frontend.

The Front End Developer will also assist with testing scripts and software deployment issues reviewing pull request code from the community. The Front End Developer may be asked to work on other related software products and single page applications. Throughout the process, the Front End Developer will be expected to perform unit tests and make bug fixes where necessary, revise code submissions (pull requests) from the open source community, merging new code with the existing code base.

The Front End Developer will also contribute to the creation of the documentation supporting the application. The Front End Developer will work closely with the rest of the Dataverse Core Team and at times with the Dataverse Community.

This position reports to the IQSS Director of Data Science and Product Research.
