Position Information
Classification Title Temporary Technical Paraprofessional FLSA Non-Exempt UGA Job Code FTE 1.00 Minimum Qualifications Position Summary
Technician responsibilities will include the collection of field data in stream systems, maintenance of gear and vehicles, maintenance of laboratory based aquatic habitats, and data entry. Work will involve deployment and collection of concrete mussel silos, collection of sediment and water samples, assistance with sediment toxicity trial and tactile snorkel surveys in stream and river systems. Technicians will work an average of 40 hours per week.
Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position
Interest in fisheries and/or aquatic systems. Preferred education in Natural Resource Management,
Forestry, Earth Sciences, Conservation, Fisheries & Wildlife, Environmental Management & Sciences, Physiological Science, Marine Biology, Ecology, Biology, or Zoology majors.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
Experience with freshwater mussel identification, sampling methods, and life history is preferred, however. on-the-job training will be provided.
Physical Demands
Hardworking and dependable. Able to work well in a small group.
Able to lift and carry at least 50 lbs. We will be working in water, and although sites will not be over the waist to chest deep, swimming ability is needed.
Applicants must be able to tolerate a variety of inclement field conditions including hot weather,
cold water and biting insects.
