Job Summary

A conductor's primary responsibility is to safely coordinate train crews on a freight train, place rail cars to facilitate loading and unloading, and makeup/breakdown trains in a rail yard, customer facility or similar locations.

Primary Activities and Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with all train orders, signals, railroad and safety rules and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations

  • Be able to safely perform all job responsibilities

  • Inspect all equipment on cars prior to departures

  • Receive and transmit information by radio and telephone

  • Read and understand bulletins, work orders, and switch lists

  • Assist with the coupling and uncoupling of cars, operate switches, and make minor repairs to railcars, including replacing heavy couplings or air brake hoses

  • Work with customers to ensure accurate movement and placement of cars; delivers excellent customer service by identifying customer needs and meeting or exceeding expectations

  • Maintain awareness of surrounding area and suspicious activity to ensure rail safety

  • Operate locomotive equipment through the use of remote control device

  • Quickly and repeatedly make precise adjustments in moving the controls of a machine or vehicle to exact positions

  • Comprehend color and/or hand signals and systems

  • Review instructions from dispatchers and other transportation employees, and discuss with locomotive engineer

  • Miscellaneous activities and responsibilities as assigned by manager

Pay Rate

Training rate $728.46/weekly

$43,000 average first year earnings

Training

You will attend three weeks of training at the Railroad Education & Development Institute (REDI) in Atlanta, GA. Starting June 24th. CSX will pay for travel, lodging and meals.

You will complete an additional 8-22 weeks of on-the-job training at your assigned location.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 18 years of age or older

  • High School Diploma/GED

  • One year verifiable work experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • One or more years of outside work exp (e.g. construction, heavy equipment op, farming,etc)
  • Experience working in a safety sensitive environment

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to mount and dismount moving equipment

  • Stoop/bend/kneel/crouch/crawl/balance/climb

  • Work in cramped, confined, enclosed, or awkward places

  • Ride on the outside of rail equipment for long periods of time

  • Walk long distances over uneven terrain

  • Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity/tracking/inspection

  • Must meet color vision and hearing requirements as described in FRA Regulations

  • Frequent lifting up to 50 lbs

  • Reasoning skills (problem solving and troubleshooting skills)

Job Requirements

  • Work safely to prevent on the job accidents and injuries

  • Wear protective equipment such as hard hat, hearing protection, or safety-toe boots

  • Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime, and various shift work

  • Work hours are based on seniority, new hires primarily work nights, weekends, and holidays

  • Must be able to report to work safely with two-hour notice

  • Complete annual training and pass safety rules examinations

  • Federal regulations require random testing for drugs and/or alcohol

  • Must pass all required assessments

  • Must pass a background screening

  • Strict disciplinary policy regarding inability to report to work within proper time frame

  • Advance to engineer position when required, based on seniority

  • This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement and membership is req.

  • Must pass a post-offer medical examination, including a drug test

VIEW JOBS 10/7/2020 12:00:00 AM 2021-01-05T00:00 Job Summary Work as a member of a crew away from home all week, working four-ten hour days to install new railroad track, maintain existing track and right-of-way. Employees must be able to meet and comply with the manufacturer's weight limitation safety rating and recommendations for any equipment associated with performing their duties, including the 300 lb. safety rating for ladders (both portable and affixed) and fall arrest equipment. We are hiring for multiple positions in each location. In addition to these immediate needs we are building a pool to fulfill future vacancies. All locations will work a team varying schedules such as: 10hr or 8hr days with 8 days on and 6 off or 9 days on 5 days off. Employees are subject to be called to work on their off days. This is a 24 x 7 operations environment; ability to work nights and weekends is necessary. Relocation is not provided. Primary Activities and Responsibilities * Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) * Participate in group discussions including unit meetings, job briefings, safety meetings or process reviews * Remove and replace track and track components (e.g. ties, rails, bars, etc.) * Replace or repair track switches with specific components * Slide and align tie plates * Drill holes through rails for insertion of bolts and tighten or loosen bolts at joints that hold ends or rails together * Correct deviations in track surface, alignment and gauge * Cut rails to specific lengths * Receive instructions, requests, orders, and information from posted bulletins, memorandums, rules and regulation manuals * Adjust, lift and roll rails - Sort track material for loading and unloading * Install and repair street and railroad crossings * Cut brush and vegetation from the right-of-way * Spray switches, angle bars and joints with oil for lubrication * Miscellaneous activities and responsibilities as assigned by manager Pay Rate Entry Rates: 90% First year - $25.35/hr 95% Second year - $26.75/hr 100% Third year - $28.16/hr Travel and meal stipend will be provided per agreement Training You will attend training in Atlanta, GA.
