Huntsman is seeking an Operations Manager supporting the Performance Products Division located in Freeport, Texas. This position will report to the Plant Manager.

Job Scope

This role provides strategic leadership and direction to the Freeport Ethyleneamines Operations Team to achieve safe, reliable, and profitable operations while being an excellent steward of the environment and neighboring communities. Operations includes both the Production Trains and Distribution. The ideal Operations Manager is inspirational, pragmatic, collaborative, and empowering. They are confident, yet humble. They teach, coach, develop. They have an eye for the details but also think strategically and out of the box. They have their own style, but adapt to the audience and the site. As a member of the site leadership team, this role is responsible for the administration, planning, coordination, and implementation of the Operations plan, in alignment with the strategic objectives of the site and the business aligned production plans.

As the Operations Manager your roles and responsibilities will be:

  • Ensures safe reliable operations through visible leadership, recognition, expectation setting, coaching, and development of the team.

  • Accountable for operation of the two Ethyleneamines trains and the filtration plant and deep well through 4 shift Operations teams that report to the Production Unit Manager, as well as the safe and efficient shipping of product by the Distribution team who report to a Distribution Team Lead.

  • Assures optimization of production rates to customer demand while ensuring quality and a risk based approach to maintenance demand, turnaround scope, project development, and cost management. Makes risks and benefits visible to decision makers and the front line.

  • Assures day to day activities in the plant through the effective leadership of his team, specifically the Production Unit Manager, Distribution Team Lead, Site Integration and Production Analyst, Operations and Maintenance Coordinator (OMC), Process Trainer, and Filter Plant Specialist while also developing and implementing work processes and strategic initiatives to keep the plant competitive and address gaps. Utilizes key performance metrics (leading and lagging) to drive performance across all accountable areas.

  • Partners with Technical and Engineering Managers on reliability and technical support to Operations including development of CAPEX projects, operating discipline in support of the bad actor program, and threat and MOC management.

  • Process Safety Leader. Accountable for timely completion of incident investigations, MOCs, and recommended actions and ensures actions are fit for purpose, robust, and sustained. Ensures team is effective in abnormal situation management, alarm management, shift handover, training, and proactive monitoring.

  • Highly effective in change management and communication, inspiring and empowering the teams to deliver objectives and exceed their own expectations.

  • Plays a key role in administration of "people" policies, hiring, promotions, performance management, and development in Production. Develops, implements, and assures plant policies and procedures.

  • Leads with a learning mindset. Inquisitive, seeks to understand, asks why and what needs to be true for an incident-free operation. Understand the key role they play in the success of their team and the site and always seeks to be an enabler and supporter.

  • Must be able to stand in for the Plant Manager for emergency management or where immediate action is required.

  • This role is a Leader of Community (leader of other leaders) with 1 Manager and 1 Team Leader and approximately two thirds of the site (of 60 Huntsman direct) in the Operations organization plus accountability nested contractors that support Distribution.

  • Manages annual budget for Operations and Distribution, but still highly influential in the maintenance spend (approximately $10Mln and a ~$13Mln turnaround every 2 years), for which the site is accountable. Participates in budgeting activities, cost reviews, and waste identification and elimination. Also works with the Raw Materials and Procurement teams to deliver efficient spend practices for direct and indirect costs related to Operations and Distribution.

  • Accountable to coach and develop the Production and Maintenance Teams, as well as encourage causal thinking and learning from incidents. Ensures coaching and recognition is documented and built into performance discussions at all levels.

  • Essential functions require presence in the workplace on a regular basis and an ability to work extra hours if needed.

  • Works collaboratively with team members with different backgrounds and perspectives.

  • Assists other employees in accomplishment of Huntsman company goals. Follows instructions and performs other duties as may be assigned by manager.

  • Participates in Environmental, Health, & Safety initiatives as set forth by the company. Participates in and completes company-required training programs.

Required Qualifications:

You must possess the below minimum qualifications to be initially considered for this position. Preferred qualifications are in addition to the minimum requirements and are considered a plus factor in identifying top candidates.

The candidate must have an unrestricted right to work for Huntsman in the United States.

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in science related field, but chemical or mechanical engineering preferred.

  • Engineering degree preferred, but deep operational experience coupled with leadership and technical knowledge can be substituted for the degree requirements (highly exceptional case).

  • 10+ years in industrial environment; petrochemical experience preferred

  • Experienced people leader (5+ years with direct reports and leadership of other managers, supervisors, or team leads preferred)

Specific Skills and Knowledge

  • Must have a solid understanding of safety, environmental, and process safety requirements

  • Requires a broad knowledge of engineering principles governing petrochemical operations. Must have extensive background in plant operations and equipment.

  • Must have high technical and analytical abilities to handle operational problems and plant compliance concerns with quick diagnosis and prompt risk-based decisions.

  • Must have strong understanding of work processes, management systems, and the use of KPIs to drive performance.

  • Must have the ability to motivate and influence people.

  • Requires a broad knowledge of engineering principles governing petrochemical operations. Must have extensive background in plant operations and equipment.

  • Must have high technical and analytical abilities to handle reliability challenges and plant compliance concerns with quick diagnosis and prompt decisions.

  • Team player who has good communication and diplomacy skills with plant employees (company and contractors), corporate service partners, and customers.

  • Good knowledge and practical experience of continuous improvement techniques and program implementation.

  • Good understanding of broader business processes required to underpin the performance of a manufacturing asset.

  • The personal ability to set, refine and challenge goals and objectives in order to maximize value for all stakeholders.

  • Initiative taker who performs consistently and effectively in difficult situations.

  • Must have a level of proficiency with Internet, Email, and Microsoft programs as well as openness to IT solutions that improve efficiency, accuracy, and safety.
