Job Duties
Norfolk State University, a NCAA Division I institution, is seeking applicants for the Athletics Mental Health Counselor/ Director of Student Athlete Well-Being position. This position will provide individual and group counseling sessions; educational seminars; consultation and referral services to the Athletics Department of Norfolk State University.
Emphasis will be on ameliorating mental health conditions and related issues typically experienced by student-athletes engaged in competitive intercollegiate sports at the NCAA Division I level. This candidate will play an integral role in collaboration with senior leadership, coaches and student-athletes create best practices/protocols regarding educational programming towards the advancement of mental health and wellness initiatives impacting student athletes. The position will report to the Athletics Director or Designee.
Position responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Provide confidential individual mental health counseling sessions and group sessions (as needed), as well as crisis management and support for student-athletes.
Provide group mental skills instruction to optimize a team's performance
Provide educational workshops, advocacy, and information regarding mental/emotional health and wellness issues to Athletic Department staff members.
Act as a liaison by providing consultations when needed between student-athletes and coaches/sports medicine staff, professors, and student affairs staff.
Maintain secure and electronic medical records along with confidentiality of medical records.
Develop mental health programs and services that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion
Complete University requirements, including POE, Title IX, and HIPAA.
Ensure that University, NCAA, federal and state policies, procedures, and/or regulations are followed.
Ongoing professional development to be informed and up-to-date on all regulations around mental health laws, NCAA rules and regulations, federal guidelines and legal interpretations related to HIPAA.
Uphold standards and ethical guidelines of the counseling profession.
Minimum Qualifications
1.Candidate must have a bachelor's degree in Psychology, Counseling, Clinical or Sports Psychology, or Mental Performance.
2.Experience with development and delivery of mental health programming.
3.Must possess an active Virginia License or Certification in mental health counseling, clinical social work, or psychology
4.Excellent oral and written communication
Additional Considerations
1.Minimum 3 years' experience working in Division I college athletics department or partnering department of institution of higher education.
2.Minimum 3-5 years' experience working in collegiate athletics relative and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience with elite athletes.
3.Demonstrated crisis intervention and management skills.
4.Master's Degree in Community or Clinical Psychology
