Position Overview

POSITION OVERVIEW

This position joins the Foundations fundraising team, which is responsible for leading Rare's fundraising efforts with philanthropic foundations. This role works very closely with Rare's CDO, Foundation Relations team, global field staff, CEO, leadership team, finance and partner networks. The role focuses on foundations fundraising and will be expected to collaborate with individual and public funding teams for strategic overlap.

This position will work very closely with the Sr. Director of Foundation Relations to manage a pool of high value donors; lead proposal development, report writing and general stewardship activities for those donors; and prospect new foundations. The Manager will be expected to quickly take on a portfolio of foundations for direct relationship management.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Foundation Relations Manager will coordinate across Rare as well as exercise independent judgment regarding the following workstreams to develop, implement and steward donor relations to meet fundraising goals:

Portfolio Development and Management

  • Work closely with the CDO, Foundation Relations team, leadership team, project teams, and others to implement strategies to meet aggressive annual and long-term fundraising goals for Rare

  • Assist in the development of a strong donor pipeline and strategic plan to significantly increase the foundations donor portfolio through active prospect research and effective cultivation

  • Develop effective strategies to identify, engage, and convert prospective donors to donors making gifts to the organization

  • Participate strategically in department and possible cross-department initiatives that significantly impact Rare's revenue

  • Manage meetings and events geared specifically towards revenue generation

  • Identify and develop plans of identification and engagement for prospective foundation donors in the United States and abroad

  • Generate immense excitement for Rare's work, both internally and externally

  • Use research to ensure strategic effectiveness and growth in new prospects for Rare

Relationship Management:

  • Build relationships with new donors and cultivate relationships with existing Rare donors through strategic communications, workshops, site visits, and in-person meetings and attendance at conferences

  • Work with leadership and program staff to promote and steward their strategic relationships with Rare donors

Writing and Communications

  • Craft, with some initial support and guidance, compelling donor proposals and other donor/prospect communications (both written and oral) for donors in your portfolio

  • Lead and contribute to writing projects geared towards the foundations audience beyond your specific portfolio, including but not limited to concepts, proposals, reports, donor updates

  • Provide appropriate support materials to CEO/leaders attending visits, including talking points, appropriate solicitation materials, background, strategy, and follow-up proposals

Project Management

  • Manage complex proposal development processes across multiple work teams

  • Manage grant reporting for a portion of the foundation donors, crafting grant reports and collaborating with the finance team for financial reports

  • Effectively manage and track donor cultivation activities in Salesforce database and provide regular progress reports to Director, Foundations

  • Surface and implement best practices in fundraising

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required. Master's degree preferred;

  • Three to five years of relationship management experience (preferably with foundations), or demonstrated equivalent and transferable skills in a sales and/or business development role;

  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively communicate across all levels within a culturally diverse organization;

  • Excellent planning, organization, and management skills, particularly as related to relationship-building, event planning, and project and budget management;

  • Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills including negotiation and conflict resolution skills;

  • Demonstrated ability to understand and communicate complex program content, a plus if in the conservation field;

  • Strong leadership skills; ability to influence and engage senior leaders, partners, and peers;

  • Proven experience in fundraising, and grant writing;

  • Energetic, flexible, collaborative, and proactive; a team leader and strategic thinker who can positively and productively impact both strategic and tactical initiatives and operate at both levels;

  • A commitment to Rare's mission and values, i.e., a passion for environmental conservation and social well-being in the developing world; ability to thrive in cross-functional team environments to build relationships across geographical distances, cultural communities, and throughout the organization;

  • Working knowledge of conservation policy desirable; and

  • Written and spoken fluency in English required; proficiency in other languages a plus.

Track, analyze, report on and respond to certain agency requests, advanced notices and new proposals. * Conduct detailed research into relevant policy issues and provide substantive, strategic policy analysis. Qualifications for success: * Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree or J.D. a plus. * At least 6 years of experience in public policy, legislative affairs, lobbying and government affairs. * Strong background on policy issues of significance to the financial services and technology industries. * Relationships with Republican and Democratic members and staff of House Financial Services, Energy and Commerce, Senate Banking and Commerce Committees a plus. * Exceptional oral and written communication skills, including an enthusiasm for public speaking. * Results-oriented self-starter with ability to distill complex issues into concise talking points, position papers and presentation decks. * Team player who can work independently as well as cross-functionally with internal stakeholders, external partners, trade associations and others. * Ability to work with minimal direct supervision, while knowing when to seek help or support.
