Posted 1 week ago

The Western Organization of Resource Councils (WORC) is seeking an experienced campaigner and organizer to join our team. The campaign coordinator works with members and staff in the WORC network to plan and execute focused and effective regional and national campaigns focused on addressing impacts of oil and gas development on communities and the environment.

WORC’s Campaign Coordinators work at the intersection of policy, community organizing and advocacy. They work with our members to develop campaign strategies that advance our network’s priorities, center our members’ voices and experience, and build our collective power to win. The Campaign Coordinators are the bridge between our network’s state-based member groups and our national partners and coalitions.

The ideal candidate for this position has a demonstrated ability to build strong relationships, support and develop member leaders, use grassroots organizing to build community power, analyze policy and work within government processes, and has excellent communication skills. Experience working on oil and gas policy is a plus, but is not required.

Who we are:

WORC is a regional network of nine grassroots community organizations in seven Western states, and is organizing our tenth organization in Nebraska. Our mission is to advance a vision of a democratic, sustainable, and just society through community action. WORC is nationally respected for our track record of organizing with rural westerners to address long-term issues affecting their families, communities, and quality of life.

What you’ll do:

Campaign Coordinators are responsible for:

  • Building & fostering relationships with leaders and staff in our network, and regional and national partners and allies, and issue experts.
  • Facilitating regular meetings of issue-based campaign teams to bring people together to find shared interest and opportunity, and evaluate and develop campaign strategies and messages, making sure lessons are shared across states, and state staff and members are engaged in regional and national campaigns.
  • Coordinating or creating original policy analysis and research that moves our state and federal campaigns forward, and providing staff and members with the information they need to make informed decisions on campaign strategy, policy positions, and more.
  • Advocating for our networks’ priorities with coalitions, allies and decision-makers.
  • Supporting regional organizing trainings, local and state-based organizing and campaigns, network conferences, and other cross-program initiatives as assigned.

If you were the Campaign Coordinator right now you would be:

  • Working with the Oil and Gas Campaign Team’s Chairperson and 2-3 other experienced members and staff from the network to plan the team’s next in-person meeting.
  • Joining regular Zoom meetings with national allies and coalitions to share intelligence and shape campaign strategies.
  • Meeting with our DC Representative to dive into a final new rule related to one of our policy priorities so that you can synthesize the contents, and work with campaign team members to update our message and draft a press statement.
  • Scheduling and planning meetings with member group staff to learn about their local and state campaigns.

Requirements

Who you are:

  • You believe that building strong relationships is needed to be successful, and have a track record of prioritizing this in your work.
  • You understand that grassroots power comes from base building and leadership development, and are committed to working with grassroots leaders to set priorities and drive campaign strategy.
  • You are excited to take a deep dive into policy proposals, and are able to identify and communicate provisions that would impact specific communities.
  • You are self-motivated, with a strong sense of ownership over goals and a desire to excel.
  • You take pride in following through on assignments and commitment, and will acknowledge when you’ve made a mistake or are experiencing a challenge.
  • You are excited to work in a dynamic position and collaborative team where responsibilities are clear, but roles shift as needs and capacity require. You can be counted on to jump in and support your colleagues.
  • You are committed to dismantling practices and structures that perpetuate systems of inequity, actively contributing to a multicultural organization, network and movement, and welcoming, reflecting on, and acting on feedback with an eye towards continuous learning.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & ABILITIES

  • Demonstrated experience working with grassroots leaders to plan, run and win local, state, regional and/or national policy and advocacy campaigns, preferably at least three years.
  • Skilled in facilitation, including the ability to bring people together around shared priorities, respond effectively to challenging group dynamics, and manage collaborative decision-making processes.
  • Ability to work effectively in multicultural settings.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE & ABILITIES

  • Experience working as a community organizer is strongly preferred, but not required.
  • Knowledge of oil and gas issues and policy.
  • Experience working with Indigenous, Latinx, immigrant, and working class communities, especially in a rural setting.
  • Experience working with coalitions.
  • Knowledge of the West, its history, and its current political climate is a plus.

We understand that the right candidate may have experience in different areas. If you don’t meet all the requirements above but have an interest in learning, we encourage you to apply.
