Position Overview

Performs various tasks related to the preparation and delivery of infant, pediatric and adult formulas and transfer of information concerning patient formula orders. Calculates, prepares, delivers, and monitors specialized formulas, modulated formulas, and medical nutrition supplements Perform inventory management, operates feeding preparation equipment, maintains sanitation in the feeding preparation room, performs quality improvement activities, completes temperature/sanitization records, and communicates information through various telecommunication modes.

Summary of Job Duties

Prepares, portions, and delivers patient feedings per prescription or registered dietitian nutritionist (DTR or RDN) instruction. Maintains patient feeding orders via the computer system and accurately prepares feeding orders not available as a ready-to-feed formula.

Transcribes feeding order information to prepared feeding labels. Report discrepancies in feeding orders to manager or RDN administration. Communicate with supervisor and RDNs regarding feeding orders, formula storage, or administration problems.

Follows processes, as established, for quality assurance monitors. Complies with daily records regarding infant, pediatric and adult feeding orders, including allergy information. Maintains an adequate inventory of Feeding Preparation Room supplies.

Unpacks, labels, and stores fortifiers, formula, and supplies in their designated storage area; rotates supplies using the first-in, first-out (FIFO) method. According to formula room policy, covers, labels, and dates formula require refrigeration. Maintains a sanitary and safe environment by following departmental and infection prevention policies; reports unsafe conditions and uses correct technique to measure solids and liquids.

Maintains a clean and orderly workspace, ensuring that department standards are met and that all sanitary activities are conducted in accordance with federal, state, and local health regulations. Maintains clean equipment, cleans small wares in the dishwasher, and records dish machine temperatures per procedure. Records refrigerator and freezer temperatures on appropriate log daily in designated pantries and work areas. Removes damaged formula and outdated formula stock from inventory and dispose of per facility guidelines.

Adheres to Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) guidelines; maintains temperature logs of prepared feedings for quality assurance. Adheres to uniform policy established in the area; no artificial nails are allowed; nails must be kept short, clean, and unpolished.

Assists in training other employees in feeding preparation and proper handling techniques as needed. Attends mandatory meetings and in-service education programs as scheduled by the department and facility. Treats all information and data within the scope of the position with appropriate confidentiality and security. Recognizes and adopts activities relevant to the specific needs of the patient population and demonstrates knowledge of specific issues directly related to the age of the patient population.

Maintains compliance with standards of operation; maintains all records and reports necessary to comply with government and accrediting agency standards, regulations, and codes. Performs additional duties as assigned.

Follow all Dietary policies and procedures. Maintains confidentiality and follows HIPAA regulations.

May receive, inspect, and store supplies; sweep and mop; Participate in monthly dietary meetings and required meetings.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements

High School Diploma or GED required; Associate Degree in technical or medical fields

  • Preferred

One year of experience working with prescription tube feeds or pharmacy experience

  • Preferred or 2 years of experience as a cook in a commercial kitchen; OR alternative, equivalent evidence of the Minimum Class Requirements.

Serve Safe Certification

  • REQUIRED at time of hire or must be obtained before completion of 120-day probationary period. Must maintain certification.
