At BMC, the dedicated Forklift Operator literally keeps business moving. This role does some heavy lifting - ensuring that materials and finished components are moved safely and efficiently on location. This is a skilled job for a trained operator, and part of the BMC backbone - enabling our teams to deliver what the customer wants, when they need it, with service they can count on.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Operates forklift with foot and hand controls.

  • Safely load lumber and building materials into storage facilities. Including the safe use of automated loading systems.

  • Keeps all bays stocked and neat to facilitate efficient load building processes.

  • Uses forklift to build outgoing orders for lumber and building materials.

  • Uses forklift to load completed orders onto delivery equipment maintaining safe procedures and stacking methods.

  • Empties trash receptacles as necessary.

  • Operates bander and other facility equipment as necessary.

  • Keep staging areas clean and organized.

  • Follow safety procedures as outlined by company safety program and operator manual for forklift.

  • Maintain a current forklift operator's license.

  • Assist load builders and delivery as required by location management.

  • Inventory monitoring as required by location management.

  • Wear required attire and personal protective gear.

  • Other duties as required.

Required Skills

  • Minimum Education:

  • High school or G.E.D.

  • Forklift Training and safety orientation.

  • Product knowledge for lumber and building materials, use a tape measure and hammer safely.

  • Majority of work is outside in working conditions that vary depending on seasons.

  • Temperature variations and inclement weather are real aspects of the work environment.

  • Must be able to lift up to 100 lbs. with assistance, spend long amounts of time sitting, stooping, reaching, bending, climbing, standing or walking.

  • Frequently works overtime during peak business months.

Required Experience

  • Minimum Experience: Up to 6 months experience in building materials or manufacturing facility or similar operating environment.

POSITION SUMMARY: Have an understanding of heavy machinery in a warehouse setting. Properly load, secure, unload and protect store deliveries and donation pickups, raw materials, and manufactured goods. Distinguish between retail goods, salvage, and trash. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Operate forklift, pallet jack, or dock cart within warehouse and dock area when required. * Neatly and accurately complete required paperwork to include manifest, donation count sheets, and truck seals. * Accurately report incidents and accidents to supervisor. * Perform operator-level maintenance on assigned equipment to include daily checks for fuel, oil, lubricants, water, antifreeze, and condition. * Present neat and professional Goodwill Central Texas image to customers, stores, and the general public. * Attend all scheduled meetings. * Provide excellent customer service. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Meet attendance and punctuality requirements. * Complete work in a timely manner. * Demonstrate sound ethics and adherence to all Goodwill Central Texas policies and procedures. * Complete department-mandated safety and training requirements. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: This position does not have supervisory responsibilities. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: * Must be a minimum of 18 years of age. * Must have good eyesight, hearing, and hand-eye coordination. * Must be able to follow directions well. * Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds on a regular basis. * Must be able to communicate effectively in English. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: * Prior forklift experience or certification a plus. * Prior experience with books, furniture, electrical, mechanical, and related merchandise is a plus. * Prior experience with pallet jacks, dock operations, and warehousing a plus. COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: $10.00/hour depending on experience and qualifications.
