The primary purpose of this position is to perform technical duties in timber stand improvement, reforestation, and tree improvement.

Responsibilities

  • The responsibilities listed below are at the full performance level.

  • Inspect timber sale area location for compliance with contract clauses governing location and construction of roads, fire prevention, personal safety precautions, and cutting provisions.

  • Prepare written reports of sale or silviculture inspections for a timber management program.

  • Explain timber sale contract provisions and technical methods to timber operators to obtain compliance with contract provisions.

  • Inform supervisor of problems that may impact forest resources or accuracy of marking and scaling for a timber management program.

  • Provide information regarding contract provisions and policies to timber purchasers, field representatives, and logging contractors to administer timber sale contracts.

  • Prepare written reports for leadership about technical and administrative aspects of timber sale inspections.

  • Monitor corrections made to remedy deficiencies found during timber sale inspections.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the date the certificate of eligible candidates is issued. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards.

Specialized Experience Requirement:

For the GS-6 level: Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level in the Federal Service; OR one (1) full year (18 semester) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position; such as : forestry, range management, agriculture OR combination of graduate level education that is directly related to the position and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. Examples of specialized experience are: Carried out common sale administration duties, resolved common problems encountered under timber sale contracts, and/or developed reports, maps, and graphs used in normal forestry work.

For the GS-7 level: Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level in the Federal service; OR one full year (18 semester) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position; such as: forestry, range management, agriculture OR combination of graduate level education that is directly related to the position and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. Examples of specialized experience are: Monitored and inspected timber sale operations having common contract requirements and conditions; prepared written reports of sale inspections; laid out timber sale boundaries, interpreted timber sale contracts (read provisions and explained to operators), applied silviculture prescriptions, understood marking guides, and identified tree species.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
