This position is located within a National Forest. The primary purpose of this position is fire suppression and prevention. This position is included in the unit fire plan as an initial attack fire suppression position for an assigned geographical area of the district or unit.

Responsibilities

Serves as an experienced firefighter on a hand crew or other related fire suppression crews performing fire suppression and/or fuels management duties under the most adverse conditions of climate, fuels, and terrain.

May inventory fuel beds, prepare associated reports, perform hazard fuel reduction projects, monitor burning conditions, pile vegetation debris and act in assigned positions such as ignition or holding specialist or other designated positions during actual fuel reduction efforts by prescribed fire.

Investigates cause of fire; observes, collects and preserves and/or examines evidence and determines probable cause of fire. Prepares written reports including maps, site sketch etc. May interview or obtain statements from witnesses.

Advises responsible parties of hazards and other unsatisfactory conditions and of other governing laws or regulations. Recognizes causes of fires and hazards and carries out technical assignments in fire prevention.

Documents findings, issues citations, and appears in court. Gives formal talks and informally provides information through personal contacts on fire prevention and on laws, rules, and regulations. Answers general recreation questions for forest users.

Inspects sites located on land within the Forest; campgrounds, buildings, resorts, construction projects, etc. Prepares day-to-day work plans. Issues permits (campfire, burning, welding, and blasting).

When not performing fire suppression duties, may be assigned to other natural resource functions. Serves as an individual or lead in the fire organization as qualified and assigned.

May perform project work such as road and trail maintenance, habitat manipulation, and miscellaneous equipment and facilities maintenance.

May assist higher level workers in forestry/range research efforts; in the marketing of forest/range resources; or in the scientific management, protection, and development of forest/range resources.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

WORK CAPACITY TEST (WCT) for Wildland Firefighters: This position participates in wildland firefighting activities.

Based on the type of work performed, TAKING and PASSING the WCT at the ARDUOUS level is a "condition of employment." The Arduous fitness (Pack) test requires completing a three (3) mile hike within forty-five (45) minutes, while carrying a forty-five (45) pound pack. You are strongly encouraged to consult with your physician and begin training immediately if applying for this position. This announcement constitutes the required 30 days advanced notice for testing requirements.

ARDUOUS FIRE POSITIONS: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be employed in a position performing hazardous duties.

An initial pre-employment medical examination is required for arduous fire positions. Failure to meet any of the required medical qualifications will be considered disqualifying for employment.

Qualifications

You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the appropriate experience requirements.

GS-05: (1) One year of specialized experience equivalent to a GS-04 level.

Specialized experience is defined as: Patrolled areas of controlled fires to mop-up by searching out and extinguishing any remaining burning material and operated specialized fire suppression equipment such as portable pumps or drip torches; Performing fire prevention patrols of a fixed area and inspected permitted use areas to ensure compliance with fire laws and regulations.

Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable.-OR

A combination of education and experience listed above.
