Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00am to 4:00pm

Job Summary: The Forestry Technician assists Foresters in the day-to-day management of University forest lands.

Additional Department Summary: All aspects of field work.

Assist with forest management activities including marking timber, administration of timber sales, forest inventories, prescribed burning, boundary line maintenance, invasive species control ect. Systematic sampling of merchantable and pre-merchantable timberland using both fixed radius plots and prism sampling methods. Identify, locate and paint property lines.

Identify and mark streamside management zones (SMZs). Identification of commercial tree species (winter and summer). Perform timber harvesting inspections to ensure compliance with contract. Assist with Collecting timber and land sale data for appraisal purposes. Proposal and implementation of timberland management activities specific to individual sites and UA goals including site preparation techniques (mechanical & chemical), prescribed burning, chemical release spray, herbaceous weed control, reforestation activities, seedling survival check, timber stand improvement activities (commercial & precommercial thinning, fertilization, chemical release, etc.

Patrol property boundaries and points of access. Oversee maintenance on assigned work areas, roads, public areas, and equipment.

Required Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED and two (2) years of forestry, agriculture, natural resources, wildlife management, or conservation experience; OR Associate's degree or higher in forestry, agriculture, natural resources, wildlife management, or conservation.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must be able to lift, handle and maneuver the tools, materials, and supplies of the job (up to 50lbs). Position will often be on your feet, standing, walking, lifting, and carrying.

Daily travel and continuous work expected. Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report as determined by the insurance carrier.

Final candidates who are not current University of Alabama employees must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen. Current Professional Logging Manager certification or the ability to obtain certification within 18 months of employment. Current Certified Burn Managers Certification required, or the ability to obtain certification within 18 months of employment.

Skills and Knowledge: Proficient knowledge and use of topographic maps, GIS mapping software, GPS units, Microsoft tablets, etc.

Proficient use of tools and equipment for building and land management. Basic plant identification and wildlife habitat knowledge. Ability to operate small and light-duty equipment (UTV, trucks, etc.) Ability to work alone and accomplish tasks, without direct supervision, required.

Ability to operate and communicate as part of a team. Ability to effectively and efficiently communicate in a professional manner in stressful environments.

Preferred Qualifications: Associate preferred in Forestry or Natural Resources.

Two (2) year or more work experience within the Forestry or Natural Resources industry preferred. Proficient knowledge in tree measurements, map reading and compass use, species identification, defect recognition and determination, quality determination, traversing, use of aerial photos, and use of timber cruising tools and techniques; Interpreted silvicultural prescriptions and timber marking guides to designate harvest timber; Measured amount and quantity of timber in designated timber sale areas; Applied instructions issued in a cruise plan.
