Responsibilities

Checks visitor use of recreation facilities. Monitors compliance with recreation area rules and regulations of parking, campfires, sanitation, use of picnic sites, or hunting and fishing. Reports violations to supervisor. Cleans recreation areas and maintains improvements.

Answers routine questions recreational activities.

Constructs and/or maintains trails.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION AND FINGERPRINT CHECK: Selection and retention in this position is contingent on a successfully adjudicated FBI National Criminal History Check (fingerprint check) and a background investigation.

Qualifications

You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the appropriate experience requirements.

GS-03: (6) Six months of general experience.

General experience is defined as: Performed farm/ranch labor, such as feeding and tending livestock or general maintenance of farm/ranch facilities; Worked in a greenhouse or nursery moving, watering, and tending plants and performing other general labor tasks; Fed and watered animals, such as in a laboratory, pet store, or zoo; Any work experience, paid or unpaid. Unpaid experience, for example, may be regular volunteer work, such as at a park, community sports league facilities, etc.-OR

Successful completion of 1 year of study that included at least 6 semester hours in a combination of courses such as range management or conservation, agriculture, forestry, wildlife management, engineering, biology, mathematics, or other natural or physical sciences.-OR

Completion of an intensive, specialized course of study of less than 1 year may meet in full the experience requirements for GS-3. Courses of this type normally require completion of up to 40 hours per week of instruction rather than the usual 20 hours per week, and are usually of at least 3 months duration. Such courses may have been obtained through a variety of programs such as those offered by business or technical schools, and through military training programs. To be creditable, such a course must have been designed specifically as career preparation for the work of the position being filled, and must have provided the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the work.-OR

A combination of education and experience listed above.

Learn more about this agency Responsibilities Assures recreation sites and areas with one or two major uses are operated and maintained in accordance with operation and maintenance plans. Schedules daily activities, establishes maintenance schedules, and inspects cleanup operations based on recreation operation and maintenance plans. Reports on conditions and use of sites and areas. Serves as inspector for recreation area cleanup and maintenance contracts. Maintains contact with and provides support to Campground Host(s). Serves as a fee collection officer. Inspects recreation areas, trails, areas of concentrated public use, and special use activities authorized by permits for compliance with the permits, management plans, public health, and safety. Performs safety hazard analyses of public recreation use areas and trails and takes or recommends corrective action. Cleans both roadside and backcountry dispersed sites. Naturalizes sites where necessary in order to control use and prevent resource damage. Installs and maintains information boards, travel signs, regulatory signs, and other signs associated with recreation sites, trails, travel management, and safety. Provides detailed information about recreation opportunities to Forest visitors and explains the Forest Service rules and regulations. Provides information on resource management practices, regulations, and current conditions. Collects, compiles, and summarizes information for recreation and trail data management systems. Provides input for programming and planning. Plans and implements projects associated with trail maintenance and construction and reconstruction projects. Reports work completed. Monitors the condition and use of trails. May be required to obtain Forest Protection Officer certification and perform law enforcement responsibilities using all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), watercrafts, and snowmobiles to patrol unit roads, trails, or waterways ensuring protection of forest property, land, and visitors.
