In partnership with the Superior National Forest of the US Forest Service, MobilizeGreen seeks a 26 week Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) Project Leader Resource Assistant ("RA") Intern to work in the Tofte and Laurentian Districts of the Superior National Forest supporting the work of MobilizeGreens's Residential YCC Program. The MobilizeGreen YCC program provides 50 diverse high school students from around the country with a 3 week residential crew experience. The RA will serve as a liaison between the US Forest Service and the YCC Crews ensuring that crews have meaningful trail projects to work on and that the work completed meets the expectations of the Forest.
Opportunities to explore and enjoy the area are endless, with Lake Superior, the Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness Area, numerous campgrounds, and hundreds of miles of trail to explore. The RAs will work closely with the district staff to identify projects, develop work plans, and support the YCC Crew Leaders and members during the program. Location: Superior National Forest, Tofte District, MN
Term: 24-26 weeks. Full time/40 hours per week; Prefered Start Date is Mid-March.
$500/week living allowance
Hands on learning and job training experience.
Travel stipend for travel to/from site

2-year direct hiring certificate with the Forest Service (must successfully complete position and 960 hours).

Duties and Responsibilities:
Serves as a liaison between USFS representatives and YCC Crew leaders
Work with YCC crews, volunteers, and other wilderness rangers to conduct trail maintenance activities (clearing trees, maintaining trail drainage, brushing, etc.)
Assists with trail maintenance and restoration including the use of a variety of hand and power tools
Assists with providing customer service to the public in alignment with US Forest Service goals and objectives
Assists with documenting accomplishments and reporting results
Assists with a variety of interdisciplinary tasks including but not limited to: completing wildlife surveys, recreation site maintenance, various fuels reduction projects, timber stand improvement.
Assist with training Crew Members in safe and proper use of tools and all aspects of the service project (may include trail construction, maintenance, wildlife habitat work, site restoration, etc.)
Assist with facilitating worksite and project, tool and equipment logistics; tool maintenance; and work schedule in partnership with MobilizeGreen YCC staff.
Help care for and maintain all program equipment and tools used in the project.
Experience and Qualifications:
Recent college/graduate student with a degree in recreation, natural resource management, or a conservation-related field; 4-Year degree preferred
Ability to work independently, work outdoors, and work collaboratively on projects.
Experience / familiarity with outdoor skills, including: hiking, safety awareness, Leave No Trace, etc.
Conservation Project Skills- Experience in conservation, or trail/conservation projects and hand/power tool use. May also include experience with carpentry, landscaping, gardening, etc.
Positive attitude, sense of humor and ability to adapt to new situations
Commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and experience working with diverse populations
Experience working with youth or young adults (ages 14-18) as a teacher, mentor, leader, counselor or coach.
Deep interest in environment/natural resource management and the U.S. Forest Service.
Valid Driver's license.
Work Environment: May be required to travel and work in remote locations on the forest, independently, and with crews. Field work and administrative work in an office. This is a physically demanding position requiring hiking up to 8-15 miles a day carrying tools and a pack over rough terrain in a remote setting in a variety of weather conditions.
