The Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O) employs a workforce of approximately 2,700 staff, represented by 15 collective negotiations agreements, and is responsible for institutional strategic initiatives and operations, which encompasses an expansive range of comprehensive service and business operations across the State of New Jersey. These include planning and construction, facilities, public safety and emergency operations, environmental health and safety, transportation, housing, and auxiliary/retail operations.

Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Foreperson Custodial Services for The Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O). This position is under the general supervision of the Operations Area Manager. The Foreperson of Custodial Services plans ,directs and coordinates all of the custodial responsibilities of a campus sector.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Interacts with Building Coordinators and vendors on a regular basis and during special events, sports events, concerts and graduation to ensure proper cleaning, set-ups and the satisfactory completion of all tasks.

  • Hires, trains, and supervises custodial staff in the performance of their job responsibilities. Interprets university policies at the first line supervisory level.

  • Responsible for conducting Step One grievances that arise in their work group.

  • Responsible for coordinating, inspecting and accepting contract services in his/her area of responsibility.

  • Maintains inventories, work orders, attendance and other required records accurately.

  • Employee may be subject to mandatory overtime.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

  • High school education; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • A minimum of two years of group leading or supervisory experience in custodial services.

Certifications/Licenses

  • Valid driver's license, two years driving experience, and successful completion of the Rutgers Defensive Driving course.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must have good communication skills and computer literacy in Microsoft Office software and in industry related standard software.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Four years of group leading or supervisory experience in custodial services.

  • Computer literacy including Word and Excel software and electronic time and attendance, and work order systems preferred.

Equipment Utilized

  • Oversees and trains staff on cleaning equipment including rug shampoo and floor waxing machines, as well as the safe use of cleaning chemicals, etc.

  • Will utilize computer equipment to obtain and update work orders and maintain time and attendance records.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • May lift equipment and supplies weighing approximately 50 pounds.
