WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

Forensic Technician 1/2 incumbents develop the knowledge and skills necessary to perform evidence inventory management and scientific support to the Forensic Biology discipline at the Alaska Scientific Crime Detection Laboratory.

THE WORKING CONDITIONS YOU CAN EXPECT:

Primary location is the State Crime Lab in Anchorage. This position will involve laboratory and office work while interacting closely with management and other staff in the Forensic Biology Discipline Section of the laboratory.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

This is a highly detailed position requiring considerable knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the full range of duties. The incumbant will be tasked with being the primary individual performing maintenance and troubleshooting on Jaboratory instruments, as well as being the secondary entry point for database (CODIS) samples into the Laboratory Information Management System.

Therefore, the incumbant must have an aptitude for high attention to detail in data entry tasks. The laboratory continues to advance toward a completely paperless system, which requires sufficient knowledge of computer programs such as Word, Excel, Adobe, and SharePoint. The incumbant must possess an ability to quickly learn and adapt to new computer programs.

FORENSIC TECHNICIAN 1

An Associate of Science degree from an accredited college in criminalistics, criminology, or a natural or physical science.

OR

Two years of post-secondary education from an accredited college that includes at least 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours in physical science courses such as chemistry, biology, physics, or criminalistics that included laboratory work.

Substitution:

Paraprofessional laboratory experience involving any combination of: the receipt, preparation, and disposal of specimens for testing; conducting routine tests; maintaining and calibrating laboratory equipment; performing quality control on equipment, solutions, and reagents; and maintaining operational supplies and materials may substitute for the requisite education on a month-to-month basis (1 month experience equals 2.67 semester or 4 quarter hours).

FORENSIC TECHNICIAN 2

The successful completion of the Forensic Technician 1 flexible training criteria.

Or substitution:

An Associate of Science degree from an accredited college in criminalistics, criminology, or a natural or physical science.

And

One year of technical experience identifying, collecting, documenting, and preserving physical evidence left at the crime scene for a law enforcement agency or crime laboratory.

Or substitution:

Two years of postsecondary education from an accredited college that included 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours in physical science courses such as chemistry, biology, physics, or criminalistics that included laboratory work

And

One year of technical experience identifying, collecting, documenting, and preserving physical evidence left at the crime scene for a law enforcement agency or crime laboratory

Special Note:

A valid Alaska Driver's license is required.

Appointments to positions in the Alaska Scientific Crime Detection Laboratory are subject to background requirements per ASCLD/LAB and the Department of Public Safety. A criminal background investigation, including fingerprinting, is required.

FLEXIBLY STAFFED

This position is flexibly staffed. The level of the job offer will be based on the selected candidate's credibly possessed and proven competencies. If hired at the lower level, you will be promoted to the higher level after completing the training plan and demonstrating competency in the work.

BACKGROUND CHECK

This position requires the incumbent to submit to a fingerprint based criminal history background check.  Due to the sensitive nature of this position, and required access to APSIN, an applicant with criminal convictions will not move forward in the selection process.
