Job Description:

The Oregon State Police - State Medical Examiner's Office in Clackamas, Oregon is hiring for one (1) Full-Time, Permanent Forensic Supervisor 2 position.

What will you do?

You will be responsible for supervising autopsy technician staff and will provide support for all morgue functions, in service of assisting and supporting the Oregon State Medical Examiner's forensic pathologists. Your job duties will include day-to-day supervision of morgue staff to ensure compliance with internal policies, consistent service delivery, reviewing and establishing morgue procedures, maintaining the inventory of morgue equipment and supplies, as well as management of weekly autopsy technician work schedules. You will coordinate daily morgue operations to accommodate the priorities of our forensic pathologists, even when this requires adjusting workflow plans throughout the day.

You will be responsible for interviewing and recommending the hiring of new staff members, providing training to your subordinates, evaluating subordinates' performance and recommending personnel actions such as promotions, transfers, or disciplinary action to ensure adequate and competent staffing.

In addition, you will be required to perform usual morgue operations including providing technical support to state forensic pathologists in preparing for and conducting medicolegal autopsies; receiving and releasing human remains to funeral homes or investigators; maintaining proper chain of custody over property and its associated paperwork; and all morgue equipment operation and maintenance coordination. You will report to the Forensic Administrator and work closely with the Chief Medical Examiner and the Deputy State Medical Examiners in the performance of these duties.

You must be able to provide credible sworn testimony in a criminal or civil proceeding arising from the performance of duties.

Minimum Qualifications (these must be addressed in your resume for full consideration):

Four years of lead work, supervision, management, or progressively related experience in forensic science for an accredited laboratory;

OR

A bachelor's degree in natural science, physical science, forensic science, or a closely related field AND one year of experience managing in an accredited forensic laboratory;

OR

A master's degree in natural science, physical science, forensic science or a closely related field;

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Skills (each skill must be addressed in your cover letter for full consideration):

  • Experience managing daily morgue operations and technical staff in a medical examiner's office, including planning and directing daily workflow to effectively utilize available resources while maintaining a flexible, adaptive approach.

  • Experience directly supervising employees, including training staff, evaluating performance, and providing coaching to represented subordinates.

  • Experience and proficiency developing positive and cooperative working relationships with direct reports, supervisors, and all internal and external partners.

  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to providing clear and thorough communication to staff, as well as funeral homes, law enforcement agencies, medical offices, grieving families, and other external partners.

  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to make well-informed, effective, and timely decisions, using sound judgment evaluating the potential impacts of those decisions to the agency.

  • Experience and proficiency in autopsy assistant practices, including obtaining biological specimens and performing eviscerations and complex dissections during post-mortem examinations.

The salary listed is the non-PERS (Public Employee Retirement System) qualifying salary range. If the successful candidate is PERS qualifying, the salary range will reflect an additional 6.95%. Please review the Classification and Compensation page for more details.
