Liberty Healthcare operates a specialized forensic mental health program within the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside, CA. This program exclusively serves adult inmates who have mental illness and are incompetent to stand trial.

Liberty Healthcare's dedicated and skilled multidisciplinary clinical team provides high quality and timely assessment and treatment services to our patients, restoring them to competency as quickly and effectively as possible - helping prevent prolonged and unnecessary jail and hospital bed utilization. This cutting-edge program is based on Liberty Healthcare's innovative model which received a Best Practice Award from the California Council on Mentally Ill Offenders.

As a Forensic Psychologist with Liberty Healthcare, you will fulfill a vital role and be responsible for:

  • Evaluating patients for symptoms of mental disorders and behavioral problems

  • Conducting mental status examinations and psychosocial histories

  • Developing DSM-5 diagnoses

  • Performing comprehensive evaluations of competence to stand trial, using selected forensic assessment instruments

  • Providing leadership in reviewing and integrating assessment information from the program's multidisciplinary team to guide court reports

  • Actively participating in staff meetings, case conferences, case presentations, and training activities

  • Providing timely crisis management assistance for patients on suicide watch or in a safety cell

  • Performing suicide risk assessments and on-call crisis management assistance

  • Referring clients to necessary psychiatric and medical services or other specialized care

  • Communicating results from evaluations to the courts and other criminal justice system stakeholders

  • Writing comprehensive court reports that are well supported by data

  • Providing effective court testimony regarding individual patient participation and response to treatment program

The incumbent will be required to work onsite at the Robert Presley Detention Center 20 hours each week, during weekday daytime hours.

Skills/Requirements

Well-qualified candidates will possess the following attributes:

  • Possess a professional license in California as a Psychologist

  • Possess formal training and/or significant professional experience evaluating and treating forensic patients

  • Knowledge of general psychological tests and forensic assessment tools

  • Ability to formulate sound diagnoses and patient-centered treatment plans

  • Possess effective written communication skills and an ability to write cogent treatment plans, progress notes and detailed forensic reports

  • Willingness to work within a locked jail setting and undergo an extensive background check process
