Eastern State Hospital, located in Williamsburg, Virginia, was founded in 1773, with an emphasis on community focused mental health care. This state of the art campus, situated on 500 acres, consists of two patient care buildings with 300 patients, and a highly skilled staff of over 900.
Eastern State Hospital is part of the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) system, and is accredited by the Joint Commission. The hospital is located in Williamsburg, which is located near several large cities and beaches, including Richmond, Virginia Beach, Washington DC and Baltimore. The incumbent will work with the Director of Psychology and the Assistant Pre-Trial Coordinator to provide comprehensive, forensic evaluations for pre-trial defendants.
This position will be required to conduct competency, sanity and the time of the offense, and risk assessments for court-ordered defendants. Prior experience in state facilities and jail and/or correctional settings is highly desirable. The ideal candidate would be well-versed in forensic assessment instruments, and tests of malingering.
While the position is primarily evaluative in nature, due to the diversity of our patient population (i.e. pretrial defendants, persons adjudicated Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity, civil commitments, and geriatric populations), we are happy to accommodate interests that may include individual and group treatment, community engagement and/or public policy development, and research. Additionally, there are continuing education opportunities and trainings through the Institute of Law, Psychiatry, & Public Policy at University of Virginia. ESH also partners with several local universities, and there is an opportunity to participate in supervision within our internship program through Eastern Virginia Medical School as a supervisor for doctoral interns placed at our facility.
Reporting directly to the Director of Psychology and the Pre-Trial Coordinator, duties and responsibilities consist of the following: 1.Provide Forensic assessments (Competency to Stand Trial and Mental State at the Time of Offense) for defendants ordered to in-patient treatment. 2.General Psychological assessments. 3.Tests of malingering/feigning. 4.IQ and personality testing. 5.Sex Offender risk assessments. 6.Neuropsychological screenings. 7.Treatment Team consultation. 8.Program development for pretrial defendant. 9.Court Testimony 10.Researches material relevant to resident specific treatment needs.
