Overview

This is supervisory work over field crews of employees engaged in a variety of routine to complex roadway maintenance and construction work.

An employee assigned to a position allocated to this class of work supervises the activities of unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled employees performing work in a specified area of County responsibility.

Jobs are assigned by priority and completion date with discretionary judgment exercised in daily production and quality of workmanship. Supervision is received from a higher graded supervisor who may inspect the crew's work in progress. Performance is evaluated based on results achieved.

Representative Duties

  • Inspects work in progress and upon completion.

  • Directs modifications and reinspects as necessary.

  • Instructs employees in the proper methods, use and equipment used in the activity supervised.

  • Reads working diagrams, sketches and simple blueprints and translates requirement to oral and written instructions.

  • Observes for safety hazards and takes precautionary measures.

  • Prepares records and reports as required.

  • May directly participate in the work of crews as necessary.

  • Maintains records for all employees including payroll, overtime, scheduling, etc.

  • Responsible for counseling, discipline and training of employees.

  • Conducts performance evaluations, discipline and training of employees

  • Coordinates with other supervisors in the division/department or other County departments or other agencies as necessary.

  • Responsible for managing supplies, equipment and manpower to ensure timely completion of in-house projects.

  • Attends regular meetings, as directed.

  • Perform routine inspections of roads and drainage infrastructure

  • Performs other related work as required.

Additional Representative Duties for Maintenance Unit Foreman

  • Plans, schedules and supervises daily activities of assigned employees engaged in infrastructure maintenance activities related to roadway and drainage systems.

  • Coordinates timely evaluation and response to citizen's inquiries

  • Respond and perform after hours call-outs (after regular hours and weekends)

  • Coordinate emergency preparedness, response and recovery efforts for adverse weather situations, and coordinate the associated work tracking

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduate or equivalent and two (2) or more years of experience in small scale construction, infrastructure repairs and maintenance, paving or construction retrofit work of roads and drainage systems, to include some previous supervisory duties. May be required to possess and maintain the appropriate valid Florida Commercial Driver's License for the type of equipment operated.In Lieu of the degree requirements, additional relevant experience may be substituted on a year for year basis.

Preferences

  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to prioritize multiple assignments and lead the crew to perform efficiently.

  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.

  • Possess knowledge of FDOT specifications

  • Ability to shoot elevation grades for drainage flow lines for stormwater conveyance

Notes

Working hours are Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

  • Goldenrod Maintenance Unit, 2530 N. Forsyth Rd, Orlando, FL 32807 (1 Foreman position available)

Educational Requirements
