Summary
Under direction, is responsible for interpreting dialog, documents or other materials essential to Criminal Court proceedings; trial preparation (communicating with client, witnesses); Assists Assistant Public Defender/Investigators/Social Workers of Office with interpretation of Spanish to English/English to Spanish and or find an interpreter of any other foreign language.
Duties and Responsibilities
Interprets from English to Spanish and Spanish to English in Criminal proceedings including trials, pleas, hearings
Translates documents, and related material used in the Courts and as requested by Assistant Public Defenders/Investigators
Find an interpreter who can assist Assistant Public Defender, Investigator, Social Worker (foreign language other than Spanish)
Maintain data and record of completed requests of interpretation/translation
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree and two years of interpreting or translating experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be a licensed court interpreter in good standing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation
Considerable knowledge of the written and spoken English and Spanish language, both formal and informal; good knowledge of legal procedures and court decorum; knowledge of the translation modes, including simultaneous, consecutive and sight; knowledge of legal terminology
Skill in dealing with hostile, abusive or irrational individuals
Ability to operate a personal computer and basic office equipment; ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; ability to listen attentively for long periods of time; ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, County employees and the public
Must have a valid driver's license.
Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
Must be certified in translating/interpreting from Spanish to English and English to Spanish.
Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek

Working conditions are in an office environment
Occasionally moves items weighing up to 5 pounds
Occasionally move about the office
Frequently communicates with others; must be able to exchange accurate information
Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery
Positions self to perform essential functions
Must be able to remain in a stationary position
