TITLE: Food Services Assistant

DEPARTMENT: Food Services

REPORTS TO: Associate Director, Food Services

Employment Status: Full Time

Reg. Hours Worked: 40 / Week, Non-Exempt

Salary: $21 -$22/hr

JOB SUMMARY:

The Food Services Assistant is responsible for assisting in the operation of the Food Services Program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE, but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide a hospitable and welcoming atmosphere for patrons, volunteers and donors to Union Station.

  • Provide guidance to volunteers with breakfast preparation and service.

  • Organize, courteously acknowledge, and safely process food donations according to Union Station policy

  • Assist Associate Director of Food Services in maintaining inventory of food and paper goods

  • Prepare food and cook as necessary

  • Help maintain all kitchen equipment

  • Maintain a safe and sanitary environment in the kitchen and food storage areas

  • Assist Associate Director of Food Services with menu planning

  • Maintain organization in pantry and food storage areas

  • Deliver meals to Union Station locations

  • Other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work indoors in temperature controlled environment with regular exposure to extreme indoor temperatures. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

  • Stand and sit for long periods of time; move and walk to various locations; climb stairs, stoop, kneel, reach, pull, push, bend, twist, and lift and or move objects (35 lbs.). Use hands to finger, handle or feel.

  • Must be able to lift 35 pounds.

  • See, hear and speak clearly in order to give and receive information and instructions and operate mechanical devices.

  • Ability to interact with other employees, clients, customers and members of the public.

  • Ability to work effectively under time constraints, prioritize work, multi-task, and adapt to changing work demands.

  • May require exposure to irritating fluids, solids, or atmospheric conditions.

  • May require exposure to high voltage equipment.

  • Able to work weekends and holidays and perform on-call duties, as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to work as a member of a team and respond to direction.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with volunteers and staff.

  • Knowledge of food storage, preparation and menu planning.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Position requires mandatory attendance on the day before, day of, and day after Christmas and Thanksgiving holidays.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • One year of experience working in food services or meal preparation in residential facility, cafeteria or commercial food establishment.

  • High School diploma or GED preferred.

  • California Department of Health Food Safety Card required.

  • Valid drivers license required; ability to utilize personal vehicle to and from locations, required.
