This position is in the Department of Nutrition and Food Service, located at the. West Texas VA Health Care System in Big Spring TX. This position will be assigned to the serving area, assembling trays for patients/residents during meal service so that all required items are on trays. You will be reading diet cards, and deciding proper foods to be served, place one or more food items on trays. Identifies discrepancies between the prescribed diets and the food items designated by the menu.
The Major duties and responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):
Provides decision of what food items to serve for the most common diets;
Delivers trays to, and collects trays from patient's bedside, dining room or cafeteria, reporting to supervisor with any problems or requests of patients;
Sets up food counters and steam tables with hot and cold foods; replenish serving line; prepare hot and cold beverages;
Provides food preparation area, follows recipes to combine ingredients for sandwich spreads, salad dressings, complex salads, and other uncooked food products;
Assists cooks by weighing measuring, and assembling ingredients according to standardized recipes;
Assembles trays for patients during meal service;
Sets up and operates a mechanical ware/dish washer;
Maintains correct water, detergent and temperature levels in dishwasher or pot and pan machine;
Removes doors, curtains, strainer pans, screens, and spray arms for preventative maintenance and cleaning;
Prepares and loads soiled china, silverware, glasses and/ or pots and pans into machine;
Performs heavy duty cleaning tasks throughout the food service and related areas. Work Schedule: Multiple Schedules

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Work involves light to moderate physical effort as follows: frequent lifting or moving of objects up to 40 pounds: pushing loaded food carts; constant standing and walking; frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending; sweeping and mopping floors; scrubbing large pots/pans/ and occasionally lifting up to 45 pounds. May also be required to work on ladders and use powered cleaning equipment
The work is performed in kitchen areas where the steam and heat from cooking and dishwashing equipment often cause uncomfortably high temperatures and humidity. The work area is well lighted but usually noisy from food service activities, and there is danger of slipping on floors where food or beverages have been dropped. Food service workers are regularly exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot working surfaces and extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration or freezing units. The duties of this position are performed in a medical setting whose scope involves providing medical to mature adults whose most common age range is between 45 and 75, and geriatric patients.
