Job Summary

Summary:Prepares, presents and serves food as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs prep work such as washing, peeling, cutting and seeding fruits and vegetables.

  • Weighs and measures designated ingredients.

  • Carries pans, kettles and trays of food to and from work stations, stove and refrigerator in accordance with safety standards.

  • Stores food in designated areas following wrapping, dating, food safety and rotation procedures.

  • Cleans work areas, equipment and utensils.

  • Distributes supplies, utensils and portable equipment.

  • Utilizes approved food recipes and production standards to ensure proper quality, serving temperatures and standard portion control.

  • Serves customers in a friendly, efficient manner following outlined steps of service.

  • Resolves customer concerns and relays relevant information to supervisor.

  • Ensures compliance with company service standards and inventory and cash control procedures.

  • Assures compliance with all sanitation and safety requirements.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

The incumbent will perform duties that require knowledge of food service operations and advanced food delivery systems including food preparation, food portioning, tray assembly, delivery and pick up, washing and sanitation, at the Washington, DC VA Medical Center under Nutrition and Food Service. Food Service Worker may perform duties in the main kitchen, domiciliary cafeteria and patient care areas. Learn more about this agency Responsibilities * Cleaning walk-in refrigerators and freezers in a food service or food handling organization. * Handling and string sanitized dishes, glasses and silverware for public use. * Making sandwiches using prepared ingredients. * Portioning food items into standard serving sizes using the proper utensils and containers. * Assembling and tossing fresh fruit or green salads in large quantities for public consumption. * Brewing coffee and tea in a restaurant/commercial size coffee/tea maker. * Scouring and scrubbing heavy cooking utensils such as mixing bowls and pots. * Lading and operating a continuous conveyor belt feeding dishwasher. * Setting up steam-tables with ht and cold food items. * Sweeping and mopping floors repetitively in high traffic areas such as corridors, entry ways, dining rooms and other areas. * Moving kitchen equipment such as stand mixers, weight scales and meat slicers to clean spaces behind and under such equipment. * Delivering meals, which may include ht foods and liquids, to patients' bedsides. * Emptying trashcans containing food scraps and waste. Food service workers are regularly exposed to noise, odors, hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot working surfaces, and extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration or freezing units.
