Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Food Service Administrator and with day-to-day direction from the Food Service Manager and/or Food Service Supervisors, this position performs lead worker duties associated with a large and complex food service program at the WVHK. Duties include leading and coordinating the work of lower-level Food Service Assistant staff preparing food for residents, such as portioning product, tray line posts, ware washing, cleaning and sanitation, handling pots and pans, and pouring coffee.

The incumbent may work in the Nourishment or Snack Programs. The Food Service Assistant 3 trains and mentors Food Service Assistant staff in all aspects of the job.

Salary Information

Starting wage is $18.12 per hour, with additional compensation for nights, weekends, holidays and overtime, plus an attractive employee benefits package.

The Food Service Assistant 3 is in pay schedule-pay range 03-10. For current State employees, pay on hire will be set following the Wisconsin Compensation Plan.

This position is not represented by a bargaining unit.

Job Details

Job duties include performing work that is medium to heavy in nature. This position frequently lifts up to 50 pounds, push/pulls up to 80 pounds, hand grips up to 30 pounds, pinches up to 15 pounds, sits, stands, walks, bends, reaches, climbs, and uses hand coordination.

These positions work an 8-hour shift between the hours of 0530 and 1830 rotating early or late shifts and every other weekend. Shifts will be assigned between the four Food Service Lead Worker positions to cover the operational needs of the facility.

It is possible that the employee will work early shifts and late shifts alternating on consecutive days. The positions require availability to work overtime as needed.

Due to the nature of the positions, WDVA will conduct a criminal background check prior to an offer of employment.

Employment in this position is contingent upon passing a pre-employment tuberculosis (TB) skin test.

Employees at this healthcare facility are required to report their COVID-19 vaccination status, whether vaccinated or not, and provide supporting documentation if vaccinated. Newly hired employees will be required to submit this information by their third day of employment.

A 12-month probationary period may be required.

Qualifications

In their resume, minimally qualified applicants will provide details about their experience in:

  • Food service operations (e.g., production facility, restaurant, long-term care facility, school cafeteria; serving food, checking quality, using industry-standard portion sizes, dietary modifications, using food safety and sanitation rules and procedures, following work safety rules and procedures, etc.)

Additional required and preferred experience that will be assessed later in the selection process are:

  • Training and leading others (e.g., demonstrating techniques, answering questions, guiding coworkers, assigning tasks, checking work product, keeping coworkers on task and on time, etc.); and

  • Using equipment and following procedures standard in the food service industry (e.g., dishwasher, mixer, coffee machine, knives, hot/cold serving carts, mechanical tray line; portioning, cleaning, sanitation, etc.); and

  • Time management and keeping on schedule; and

  • Preparing and serving mechanically altered foods; and/or

  • Stocking, inventorying, labeling, storing, and disposing of food per industry standards; and/or

  • Professional communication and teamwork; and/or

  • Reading and following documentation; and/or

  • ServSafe certification
