Overview

Responsible for assisting in the daily operation of a commercial kitchen, including preparing meals, serving meals and daily upkeep of the kitchen and dining areas in accordance with the requirements of the Department of Health. This is a regular full time position with a workweek expectation of 40 hours per week

Responsibilities

  • Prepare facility meals in accordance with menu; making allowances for clients medically approved special dietary needs. Serve meals to clients and staff according to posted time schedule.

    Monitor the number of staff meals received each day. Wash and put away all dishes. Maintain and organize dish-room.

    Put away perishables and non-perishable stock items on delivery days. Check and record temperature of food before each meal is served. Complete assigned cleaning duties as scheduled or as necessary.

    Maintain dining room and kitchen cleanliness and organization. Maintain and organize storage spaces and cookers. Assist volunteers in their responsibilities.

    Meet and greet all clients in a professional and courteous manner. Driving a company vehicle to pick up and deliver meals, supplies, donations, etc., as required. Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships with co-workers and supervisors.

    This would include, but not limited to such actions: conflict resolution in a professional manner; courteous treatment of staff, visitors and clients; respect of others property and person and appropriate communication to and about co-workers and supervisors. Support the mission of The Harbor Light Center by treating every client and colleague with individual respect and dignity, and without discrimination of any kind. And all other duties as assigned or at management requests.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent preferred. Minimum six (6) months experience working with people, preferably in a food services or other similar environment.

Ability to take directions and adapt to fast pace environment. Must be familiar with quantity food preparation, kitchen equipment and proper sanitation practices. Must be able to demonstrate sensitivity to issues of homelessness, chemical addiction, and unemployment, racial and cultural diversity.

Possess an aptitude in oral communications. Must be trustworthy, especially in confidential matters. Must be willing to support The Salvation Army mission, complete the Safe from Harm course within 30 days of hire, pass the background checks and pre-employment drug testing and have a valid drivers license and meet the MVR drivers qualifications.

Tentative Schedule - 9:00am-2:00pm SUMMARY Under general supervision, completes a variety of tasks in the Food Service Department (FSD) Nutrition Center or MPS school kitchen; prepares and serves food, cleans work areas and equipment, operates a cash register/service terminal, and prepares and transports bulk food and supplies. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: * Assists the Food Service Department (FSD) staff with basic food preparation, proper food storage, and maintaining the cleanliness of the food service, dining and storage areas. * Performs work within scope of authority and training, and in compliance with MPS policies and quality standards; duties will vary according to job assignment. * Cleans and maintains orderly, safe and sanitary conditions in FSD facility; cleans dishes, kitchen utensils and equipment; cleans tables, chairs, floors and surfaces. * Receives, transports and stores food according to sanitary handling standards; scoops bulk foods into containers, makes and wraps food portions, packages food orders. * Prepares the dining area for meal time; prepares and serves meals as directed. * Counts products received and shipped; verifies that the quantity, quality and type of products match the daily summaries and work orders; provides accurate and timely numbers for production and inventory. * Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with students, clients, visitors, and MPS staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment * Enthusiastically promotes the Superintendent's goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures. * Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, records and MPS information. * Other duties or tasks may be assigned on an as-needed basis * At times may be required to work outside normal business hours and work extended hours to accomplish requirements of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education, Training and Experience Guidelines High School Diploma or GED equivalent; some food handling experience is preferred. Knowledge of: * Safety and sanitation practices for food preparation, distribution and storage. * Personal sanitation and hygiene regulations. * Principles of record keeping and records management. Skill in: * Following and maintaining safety standards. * Following verbal and written instructions and procedures. * Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers and clients. LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS A valid Minnesota State Driver's License may be required. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT Work is performed in a commercial food service and kitchen work environment; moderate physical requirements, with risk of burns and cuts; frequent lifting, carrying, and moving up to 50 pound containers of food preparation materials and equipment; may require working in a walk-in freezer. Eligibility for position is based on passing the required pre-placement exam. Final candidates may be invited to interview with a committee. Final appointment to this position will be contingent upon passing a criminal background check.
