The Flight Safety Human Factors Business Partner assists the Flight Operations Safety Department in daily safety operations and responsibilities with a focus on Human Factors within our organization. This includes, but is not limited to, applying an organized focus on Human Factors regarding voluntary safety reporting, flight data monitoring, Pilot fatigue, and Safety Assurance reports/issues. This position is also involved in forwarding recommendations to appropriate departments, enhancing SMS components in Flight Operations, collaborating with other Southwest Human Factors Teams, the FAA, universities, NASA, and other organizations, as well as providing intentional, consistent Human Factors support for Flight Operations projects and future undertakings.


  • Assist Flight Operations Safety Teams in daily safety operations and responsibilities.

  • Research voluntary safety reports (ASAP), flight data monitoring (FDAP), Fatigue, and Safety Assurance reports, and frame / communicate recommendations to appropriate departments.

  • Identify hazards, analyze risks, validate, and verify effectiveness of Flight Ops Safety recommendations.

  • Support the ASAP Event Review Team, Fatigue Safety Action Group and FDAP Monitoring Team with Human Factors inputs and analysis.

  • Support flow of Flight Safety and Human Factors information to drive monthly Safety briefings to department Leadership as well as provide human factors guidance for annual recurrent training of Pilots Create / Edit educational and Human Factors centric information including articles, videos, and classroom content.

  • Develop and facilitate Human Factors training.

  • Support Training and Procedures Teams by providing an independent look at company manuals for consistent procedures and use of the Risk and Resource Management (RRM) model, and prioritizing practical effective solutions to everyday problems that lead to errors on the flight deck.

  • Collaborate with other Southwest Human Factors Teams, the FAA, universities, NASA, and other organizations on grants/research studies to benefit training, procedures, and RRM across the airline including cost effective initiatives.

  • Represent the Flight Ops Safety Team on behalf of SWA Flight Operations at industry events and as part of industry trade groups.

  • Represent Flight Operations at the SWA Human Factors Advisory Council.

  • Provide friendly service to and maintain positive relationships with all internal and external Customers.

  • Work in a cooperative spirit to ensure the success of our Company.

  • Must be able to meet any physical ability requirements listed on this description.

  • May perform other job duties as directed by Employee's Leaders.



  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent education required.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Must have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986.


  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent education required.

  • Bachelor's degree required, with an emphasis in Human Factors, Organizational Psychology, Aviation Psychology, or Safety preferred.

  • Master's degree with research background preferred.

  • Professional safety certificate from a recognized institution (USC, SCSI, BCPE or DoD) preferred.


  • Five years' experience in Aviation Safety or Human Factors required.

  • Three years' experience in delivering presentations for both small and large audiences required.

  • Ability to translate human factors concepts and research results clearly into an operational setting required.

  • Five years' experience in civilian or military flight operations preferred.

  • Experience in FAR 121 airline operations preferred.

  • Significant research experience preferred.


  • FAA Pilot certificate preferred.

  • Board Certification in Professional Human Factors/Ergonomics preferred.


  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 25-50 pounds as needed.

  • Some business travel and extended hours required.


  • Must be able to comply with Company attendance standards as described in established guidelines.

  • Strong analytical investigative and problem solving skills.

  • Outstanding organizational skills with strong attention to detail.

  • Strong communication skills including written, verbal and presentation skills required.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work independently and as a Teamplayer.

  • Sound understanding of commercial airline operations.

  • Must demonstrate and maintain an extremely high regard for confidential and sensitive information.

  • Must be able to work under tight time constraints and meet deadlines.

  • Must be able to comply with Company attendance standards as described in established guidelines.


  • Must meet expectations as to confidential, proprietary, and sensitive Company information.

  • Must be able to acquire and maintain a government issued security clearance.

  • Must meet confidentiality expectations as to confidential, proprietary and sensitive Company information.

  • Must maintain a well-groomed appearance per Company appearance standards as described in established guidelines.
