Flint Urban Safety and Health Corps

Flint Urban Safety and Health Corps (FUSHC) AmeriCorps members serve at a variety of nonprofits throughout the community and, through their host sites, provide direct service to residents affected by the water crisis to assist them in key areas of recovery. Those areas are: 1.

Food security and nutrition; 2. Behavioral and developmental health; 3. Early education; 4.

Medical management; 5. Crime prevention. Members serve in conjunction with community organizations including community development corporations, local nonprofits, church organizations, education outreach centers, and literacy centers.

In addition, members are responsible for planning and executing a number of both small and large-scale events that support and further the Program's mission. Members will present on all program areas covered under the FUSHC umbrella. FUSHC members will meet on a monthly basis for professional development, networking, and training as part of the Flint National Service Accelerator.

Each FUSHC host site will receive the support of the member based on the organization's needs and the member's skill set, so in many ways this program is tailored to pair the needs of differing organizations with the talent pool of the service members. That said, members serve in a specific capacity to advance the program goals of the Flint Urban Safety and Health Corps and are not available to assist with the general operations of an organization. AmeriCorps members are engaged in National Service and are not volunteers or employees.

Member Duties : Members who serve with Flint Urban Safety and Health Corps (FUSHC) provide direct service with community-based organizations in a variety of ways. Each organization receives the support of the member based on the member's skill-set and and organization's needs, meaning that day-to-day activities can vary between host sites.

Although this program is designed to fit the needs of differing organizations with the talent pool of the service members, all FUSHC members will connect residents with resources and educate the community on topics related to water crisis recovery. Duties can also include teaching urban farming practices, providing tips on healthy eating and nutrition, connecting residents with early childhood education programs, assisting neighborhood organizations with blight removal, and teaching mindfulness techniques to children and adults.
