Start your future with a new mission, join Northrop Grumman's Mission Systems Sector! Northrop Grumman is seeking a Flight Test Systems Engineer to support our Flight Test organization, located in Baltimore, MD.

The Flight Test Systems Engineer performs technical planning, electrical systems design, electrical systems interface definition, electrical system integration, electrical system verification and validation test support, cost and risk analyses, and supportability and effectiveness analyses for total systems.

Analyses are performed at all levels of total system product to include: concept, design, fabrication, test, installation, operation, maintenance and disposal. Systems are typically radar systems.

The Flight Test Systems Engineer roles and responsibilities include:

  • Work with a skilled team of experienced former military test pilots, system software and hardware experts, and other flight test professionals integrating and testing advanced electronic systems on board highly modified experimental aircraft

  • Ensure logical and systematic conversion of customer or product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints

  • Perform functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade studies, requirements allocation

  • Occasionally (15-20% of time) operate out of customer locations (typically military test centers; domestically only, no overseas travel anticipated)

  • Participate in systems test involving monitoring and operating systems while aircraft is involved in a flight test

  • Must have excellent written, verbal communication, and presentation skills with demonstrated ability to lead working groups and technical interchange meetings

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently under limited direction within the scope of an assignment and use independent judgment in determining methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria

The chosen candidate must have the ability and desire to work in a fast paced, fluid environment and adapt to frequently changing needs of programs and customers on a weekly or daily basis.

This job may be filled as an Engineer or a Principal Engineer based on the requirements below.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's of Science Degree in Electrical or Systems Engineering, or other related STEM degree and at least 2 years of relevant experience OR a Master's Degree in a STEM area with 0 years of relevant experience

  • Experience with design, integration and/or troubleshooting of electrical systems

  • Willingness and ability to fly on experimental aircraft

  • The ability to obtain and maintain a US secret level security clearance; this requires US citizenship. Clearance must be obtained in a timely manner per business requirements.

Basic Qualifications for Principal:

  • Bachelor's of Science Degree in Electrical or Systems Engineering, or other related STEM degree and at least 5 years of relevant experience OR a Master's Degree in a STEM area with 3 years of relevant experience

  • Experience with design, integration and/or troubleshooting of electrical systems

  • Willingness and ability to fly on experimental aircraft

  • The ability to obtain and maintain a US secret level security clearance; this requires US citizenship. Clearance must be obtained in a timely manner per business requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of aircraft systems - primarily avionics, electrical power, and cooling

  • Some experience with avionic systems development and testing

  • MS Degree in Electrical or Systems Engineering

  • Knowledge/familiarity with MIL-SPECs and FAA

    Requirements:
    MIL-STD-704, MIL W 5088 and 14 CFR Parts 23 and 25
  • Previous experience following an avionics system from conceptual design, manufacturing, development, integration and test, through production

  • Current Secret clearance or higher

This position will be located in Baltimore, MD. The Aeronautical Engineer will become a member of a unique organization within Northrop Grumman that provides the venue to flexibly showcase discriminating capabilities by taking Company products from the lab to the airborne environment on a fleet of highly modified testbed aircraft. The business area is focused on the design, analysis, modification, integration, ground and flight testing, and airworthiness certification of airborne surveillance and communication technologies onto manned and unmanned flying testbed aircraft. The Aeronautical Engineer will be the department's aerodynamic subject matter expert and will design and analyze aerodynamic modifications for our flying test bed aircraft fleet. The Candidate will work closely with a multi-disciplined team comprised of other Engineers, Pilots, Maintainers and Inspectors throughout the entire lifecycle of the air vehicle modification programs. The Candidate will also be a principal department interface with large Aeronautical Engineering staffing at other Northrop Grumman sectors and campuses. The Aeronautical Engineer must be capable of leading and mentoring team members from other disciplines on aerodynamic design and analysis techniques and best practices related to air vehicle modification and configuration design. A strong background in the development of conceptual/preliminary aircraft design and aircraft modification is paramount, including configuration design, air vehicle integration and preliminary outer mold line surface design and loft. In addition, She/He should be well versed in core Flight Science disciplines including aerodynamics, performance, propulsion, stability and control, CFD, and mass properties. The Engineer will be expected to review a variety of data sources, assess an aerodynamic risk level, prepare briefings and communicate results both internally to Flight Test Department personnel during design and readiness reviews as well as externally to various Customers' Airworthiness Subject Matter Experts. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to: * Performing and leading aerodynamic design and analysis activities for air vehicle modifications * Using an array of analysis tools ranging from low order methods to processing, interrogating and analyzing high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics simulations * Developing aerodynamic loads to be used by Loads & Dynamics Engineers and Structural Analysts * Supporting flight and ground test activities, including identifying test instrumentation and test data reduction and analysis * Analyzing, investigating, and resolving non-routine problems * Reviewing and preparing flight test plans and reports * Assessing effects of modifications on aircraft performance and flying qualities, including added drag on takeoff and climb performance and effects on aircraft stability and control The successful Candidate will be a self-starter, a team player, and possess the ability to research and effectively resolve technical issues both independently and as part of a large multi-disciplined team. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, as well as interpersonal skills in order to coordinate with a variety of disciplines is also essential.
