The Patient Care Observer is responsible for remaining in constant attendance with an assigned patient to help maintain the patient's safety under the direction of the unit's Shift Charge Nurse.

This position is part of the 1199SEIU Bargaining Unit at Cooley Dickinson Hospital.

This position reports to the Nurse Manager and operates within established organizational and departmental policies and procedures.

Flex observers will generally work 24 hours per week. However, based upon the Hospital's patient care requirements as determined at the discretion of the flex observer's manager or designee, a flex observer may be required to flex her/his hours either up 8 hours or down 8 hours within a week. Call is required for this position.

Flex time observers in a 24 hour position will receive health and dental benefits consistent with how regularly scheduled 30 hour observers receive those benefits. Flex observers will be paid each week based on how many hours worked and/or benefit time usage - although they are eligible to receive health and dental insurance benefits consistent with a 30-hour observer.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • Ability to communicate with children and /or adults required

  • De-Escalation training required within 6 months

  • Experience working in a clinical environment preferred

The PCA performs other patient care related duties and unit duties as needed, and may function as a patient care observer to monitor for patient safety in situations where 1:1 observation is required. The Patient Care Associate/Unit Secretary is responsible for performing a variety of administrative tasks to record, verify, and receive patient, unit, and hospital information reflecting admissions, transfers, discharges, patient data, patient census, and related data in addition to performing routine PCA work. The PCA/Unit Secretary participates in maintaining necessary supplies and equipment and supports patient care on the unit by participating in hourly rounding, assisting with answering call bells, communicating specific care needs to the clinical staff, passing meal trays, and setting up meal trays. This position is part of the 1199SEIU Bargaining Unit at Cooley Dickinson Hospital. This position reports to the Nurse Manager and operates within established organizational and departmental policies and procedures. * High school diploma or equivalent required * Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required * Ability to perform routine patient care activities under the direction of licensed nursing personnel requiring technical or on the job training required * Nursing Assistant certification, Medical Assistant certification, or a nursing student who is actively enrolled into a nursing program with a minimum of 6 months of student clinical experience required. Patient Care Associates hired prior to April 16, 2013 are grandfathered into their current position without being required to have a nursing or medical assistant certification. * Six (6) months to one (1) year nursing assistant experience required * One (1) to three (3) years secretarial experience preferred * Health care experience preferred * Ability to multi-task and handle stress crisis situations effectively required * Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology required * Demonstrated typing skills and computer experience required * Demonstrated interpersonal, organizational, and oral and written communication skills required Partners Healthcare System Northampton MA
