The City of Ontario's Fleet Services Division is seeking interns to observe and participate in a variety of tasks that support the overall operation of the department. The Fleet Services Intern will assist with a wide variety of fleet maintenance and repair duties under the guidance of the department's Equipment Mechanics and Senior Equipment Mechanics.

Fleet Services Interns are provided with learning opportunities to enhance their principles and practices of fleet maintenance. As with any internship experience, individuals who are resourceful with a desire and initiative to learn as much as possible from experienced employees will have the greatest benefit from their internship.

The ideal candidate will be a team player and demonstrate support for the team by eagerly accepting new tasks and responsibilities. Additionally, ideal candidates will be a role model for the City's Approach to Public Service

The Fleet Services Intern is a paid, part-time/temporary position scheduled to work no more than 29 hours per week and is not eligible to participate in the City's health insurance or retirement plans.

The Public Works Agency

The Public Works Agency provides essential construction, maintenance and repair services to the citizens and businesses of Ontario through the Parks and Street Maintenance, Integrated Waste, and Municipal Services. The Fleet Services Department

The Fleet Services Department is responsible for providing fleet maintenance and repair, including vehicle procurement, fuel management and distribution, accident repairs, data tracking, and fleet analysis for approximately 1000 City-owned motor vehicles and equipment. The mission statement of the Fleet Services Department is to provide safe, reliable, efficient and long-life operating vehicles and equipment to the City of Ontario through the application of preventative maintenance and timely repairs and replacement.

Examples of Essential Functions

The essential functions typically performed by the Administrative Intern assigned to the Fleet Services division include the following:

  • Assists members of management, professional, and technical staff by performing basic administrative and technical assignments.

  • Assists with specials projects and events.

  • Assists in performing vehicle inspections on brakes, instrumentation, emission control devices, and cooling systems.

  • Performs basic preventative maintenance on vehicles including replacing fluids and other expendable items.

  • Maintains repair order records indicating tasks, hours expended, and cost of parts.

  • Cleans and maintains work areas.

  • Assists Mechanic and Lead Mechanic in performing repairs.

  • Assists servicing tires on all City vehicles.

  • May drive service vehicles and field equipment into and out of the service bays for maintenance work and to perform road tests.

  • Assist the Parts department with ordering, picking up, stocking, issuing, and inventory of parts.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualification Guidelines

Education

Equivalent to a high school diploma or recognized equivalent at time of appointment.

Special Requirements

From the time of the appointment (hire), current enrollment in an Automotive Technology program at an accredited college or university. Maintenance of a minimum GPA of 2.0 in related studies. Length of employment in this classification is limited to 3 years or until the completion of an AA degree at the discretion of the department.

License

Valid California Class C driver's license and an acceptable driving record at time of appointment and throughout employment.

Desirable

Previous paid work experience related to vehicle or fleet maintenance.
