POSITION SUMMARY
Performs a wide variety of mechanical repairs to gasoline and diesel-powered automotive, heavy construction and other power-driven equipment. The incumbent must work well independently and with teams, while providing excellent, respectful customer service and human relations skills, which support the City of Englewood's vision, mission and values.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The listed examples of work are not intended to be all-inclusive. They may be modified with additions, deletions, or changes as necessary.
Performs a variety of duties (fabricating, maintenance, and repair) requiring knowledge of the City's Fleet. This includes the following:
Fleet Mechanic I
Provides friendly customer service and advice including training in the proper use of mechanical equipment.
Road tests, inspects, diagnose, and troubleshoots automotive, and trucks and a variety of diesel and gasoline powered maintenance and construction equipment.
Performs scheduled preventative maintenance and inspection of vehicles.
Repairs, adjusts and replaces brake systems on light duty vehicles including disc, and hydraulic brakes.
Performs maintenance on the fuel island.
Drops off and pick up units to external vendors.
Picks up parts and supplies.
Cleans equipment, vehicles and shop.
Shadows and assists Fleet Mechanic II when performing complex repairs.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Fleet Mechanic II
All job duties under Fleet Mechanic I.
Performs repair and maintenance on heavy construction and maintenance equipment, diesel-powered heavy-duty dump trucks and over the road tractors, emergency vehicles, police patrol vehicles, and light duty vehicle.
Diagnoses and repairs emission related problems using appropriate equipment.
Troubleshoots and repairs vehicles and equipment at job site. Responsible for making recommendations on whether repairs are performed on site or at Fleet Repair Facility.
Performs preventative maintenance and repairs on gasoline, diesel and alternative fuel vehicles and equipment.
Repairs steering, suspension and alignment related problems. Performs toe in adjustments.
Diagnoses and repairs starting, charging, and load management systems including repair or replacement of batteries, alternators, generators, starter, wiring, and electrical components on both 12- and 24-volt systems.
Diagnoses and repairs hydraulic and air brake systems including inspection and machining of drums and rotors, 2- and 4-wheel ABS, 4-wheel disc, multi axle, and trailer brakes on light and heavy-duty vehicles.
Diagnoses and repairs gas and diesel fuel injection systems, alternative fuel systems, computerized emission control systems, and ODBII. Diagnoses and repairs conventional and computer-controlled ignition systems, including light, heavy and off-road equipment.
Diagnoses, repairs, and rebuilds clutches, differentials, power take offs and transfer cases.
Diagnoses transmissions and performs vehicle repairs such as filters, gaskets, seals, and computer-controlled systems, all associated wiring and associated hydraulic components.
Diagnoses and repairs pumps, valves, switches and controls, both computer and manual related hydraulic, pneumatic, and cooling systems including aerial equipment.
Installs special lighting and equipment for City vehicles including new vehicle preparation, emergency lighting, communication systems, hydraulic and pneumatic auxiliary systems, plows and sanders, toolboxes and hitches.
Diagnoses, charges, recycles, and repairs air conditioning and heating systems including compressors, manifolds, and computer related controls.
Diagnoses, repairs, and overhauls gas and diesel engines, both in-frame and out of frame.
Uses welding and cutting equipment to make repairs or modify equipment.
Keeps records of work performed, time and materials used by job in a computerized maintenance management system.
Ability to work on call as needed.

PREPARATION AND TRAINING
A valid Colorado Driver's License and good driving record;
Fleet Mechanic I:
High school or equivalent
Ability to obtain and maintain three ASE Certifications: T8 preventative maintenance, A5 Brakes, C1 Service Consultant within 18 months of hire.
Ability to obtain CFC refrigerant recovery license within 6 months of hire.
A combination of two years' experience in an automotive fleet maintenance repair, and or Service Writer field preferred.
Fleet Mechanic II:
High school or equivalent
All certifications for Fleet Mechanic I.
Ability to obtain DOT emissions certification within 6 months of hire.
Five years' experience in a fleet maintenance repair field.
Ability to obtain a valid Colorado Class B Commercial Driver's License, as position discipline requires (typically Master Medium/Heavy Truck Mechanic designation) within 12 months of hire.
An equivalent combination of education, training and relevant job experience may be substituted.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work is performed inside the City's garage and occasionally outside. Works near moving mechanical parts; exposed to fumes, airborne particles, and various chemicals, some of which may be toxic. The employee is exposed to various conditions including noisy, hot, and cold conditions. Sufficient physical stamina and strength is required to safely perform the following:
Push/pulling of up to 75lbs of force; lifting floor to shoulder of up to 85lbs; lifting shoulder to overhead of up to 50lbs; carrying up to 85lbs.
Occasionally stand, climb stairs, bend for periods of time, reach overhead, crawl, kneel, crouch, climb ladders, balance, use fine motor skills and manipulation, use near acuity and color vision and frequently stoop.
Constantly sit, walk, squat, handle tools or other equipment, hear, use far acuity, depth perception and peripheral vision.
HOURLY RATE
Fleet Mechanic I: $19.75 - $29.62/hour
Fleet Mechanic II: $22.31 - $33.47/hour
