Nature of Work: This is highly skilled maintenance and specialized repair work on a variety of complex types of automotive, medium, heavy truck, forestry, golf turf, construction, fire apparatus and related fleet equipment. Work may include acting as a lead worker and providing training to subordinates. Work is performed under the direction and general supervision of a foreman.

Education and Experience: The knowledge, skills, and abilities may be acquired through, but are not limited to, the following combination of education and/or experience.

High school diploma or its equivalent AND 1. Two (2) years of vocational or trade school in an automotive or diesel mechanical program AND Four (4) years of experience as an automotive and/or heavy equipment mechanic at a dealer or large fleet work environment OR 2. Six (6) years of experience working as a skilled mechanic in a dealer or large fleet work environment, including experience with gasoline, diesel, and electrically powered equipment OR 3. An equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience.

Special Qualifications:

Must possess current Master-level ASE Certification in the Automobile & Light Truck Certification (A Series) or Medium-Heavy Truck Certification (T Series) or EVT Master Level III in Fire Apparatus or Ambulance Technician.

Must possess a valid class "A" commercial driver's license with "N" endorsement, and air brake certification.

Must possess a forklift operator's permit by the end of the probationary period.

Must possess a Second Grade Hoisting and Engineer's Certificate by the end of the probationary period.

Must possess a motor vehicle A/C license valid under section 609 of the Clean Air Act by an EPA approved program by the end of probationary period.

Must be in possession of tools specified by the City which will be inspected and approved by a shop supervisor.

Must be willing to purchase additional hand tools as needed.

Pay Range: $31.62 with step increases to $38.42 Hourly

Examination Information: The examination will consist of a structured interview which will be scheduled at a later date. The structured interview is designed to assess job-related knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position. The final eligibility list will be assembled from those candidates achieving a passing score of 50% on the structured interview (100% weight).

Veteran Points: To claim five (5) points for veteran's preference, you must submit proof of service (such as a DD-214) that includes the date of induction, date of honorable separation, and Social Security number. (You must have completed more than 180 consecutive days of active duty.) To receive an additional five (5) points credit for disability, you must submit proof of eligibility from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs dated within the last 12 months. This information must be submitted to the Human Resources Department by May 3, 2024.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of, and ability to operate, computers and other technology using standard or customized computer or systems software applications appropriate to the assigned tasks.

  • Considerable knowledge of modern methods of the automotive, medium/heavy truck, construction, forestry, golf turf, and fire apparatus trade.

  • Considerable knowledge of the operating principles and mechanics of gasoline and diesel engines.

  • Knowledge of the design, construction, repair, and maintenance of a wide variety of conventional and specialized automotive, diesel, fire, and ambulance vehicles.

  • Knowledge of the types of automotive tools and equipment, including specialized tools, gauges, machinery, and shop equipment utilized in the repair, servicing, and maintenance of both automotive and diesel fire equipment, including the use of gas and electric welding equipment.

  • Knowledge of hydraulic equipment systems and electronic controls.

  • Knowledge of fire ladders, engines, pumps, and transfer cases.

  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions of mechanical maintenance and repair.

  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium/ heavy truck, construction, forestry, golf turf, and fire apparatus equipment.

  • Skill in the care and proper use of master-level tools and machine equipment used in the automotive and mechanical trade.

  • Skill in locating, diagnosing and repairing mechanical, hydraulic and electrical defects in the automotive, medium/heavy truck, construction, fire apparatus and mechanical equipment.

  • Skill in effective time management.

  • Ability to learn and adapt to advances in computer and electronics device technology and software.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, and with members of the general public.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

  • Ability to read and comprehend technical maintenance and repair manuals.

  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor in confined spaces.

Essential Functions: Any one position may not perform all of the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all of the duties that may be performed in positions allocated to this class.

  • Performs and coordinates master-level diagnosis, maintenance and repair of automotive, medium/heavy truck, forestry, golf turf, construction and fire apparatus vehicles including overhaul and repair of gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions and drivetrains, heating and cooling systems, alignments, clutches, brake systems (including air brakes), differentials, exhaust systems, fuel systems, and a variety of small engine driven equipment. Performs all the duties of a Fleet Maintenance Technician.

  • Performs scheduled and preventive maintenance and repairs of equipment and performs equipment inspections to determine safety conditions and extent of repair work needed.

  • Performs routine welding in conjunction with regular heavy equipment mechanical work.

  • Repairs and maintains specialized heavy equipment and diesel fire equipment including pumps, valves, power take-offs, hydraulic systems, and steering mechanisms; repairs, builds, or rebuilds special bodies.

  • Repairs and maintains assemblies and accessories including single and two-speed rear axles, multi-speed transmissions, hydraulic compression units, and electronic control systems and components.

  • Reviews and determines required repair and maintenance needs, creating and updating work orders in fleet management systems and providing accurate estimates of labor and repair costs.

  • Assists with field maintenance and repairs as required; may drive and operate the tow truck to facilitate vehicle recovery in certain instances.

  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses complex and unique vehicle problems and provides required specialized repairs, independently or by assisting the efforts of subordinate technicians.

  • Prepares reports and records using a computerized fleet management system and maintains parts and equipment inventory levels and updates tracking systems.

  • When directed, serves as a lead worker by providing work direction, on-the-job training and provides technical guidance of maintenance and repair work.

  • Maintains organization, safety, and cleanliness of work area and related equipment and tools.

  • Maintains regular job attendance in accordance with a schedule established for the position by the supervisor.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of this classification.
