BASIC FUNCTION

The Fleet Manager assures company assets (Tractor/Tanker) are proactively maintained and repaired in compliance with all DOT standards.

The Chemical Division Fleet Manager is responsible for scheduling and performing tests and inspections on equipment to minimize equipment down time during peak seasons. The fleet manager must be able to perform, as well as oversee, routine diagnostics/troubleshooting and repairs.

Responsible for the entire Chemical Division, this role is responsible to work alongside department managers and outside vendors to assure tractors and trailer, tankers are available and operating as required. Weekly communication and travel to Southwest, Midwest, and Southern states will be required.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Travels within a multi-state region (Southwest, Midwest, and Southern)

  • Oversees routine maintenance on equipment, including scheduled Preventive Maintenance (PM) services, diagnostics, troubleshooting.

  • *Arranges and schedules repairs and testing with outside vendors

  • *Scheduling tests and inspections on equipment within the designated region ahead of season and before expiration to keep work spread out and minimize equipment down time during peak season

  • *Works with and communicates with Operations, VP of Fleet Maintenance and other department heads to ensure quality, compliance and safety of the company's fleet

  • *Works with state agencies to ensure that required extra inspections and certifications are completed.

  • *Performs / oversees routine maintenance on equipment, including scheduled Preventive Maintenance (PM) services, diagnostics, troubleshooting and repair on the following:

  • Cummins engines with Cummins Insight and Cummins Quickserve

  • Eaton Auto transmissions with Service Ranger 4

  • ABS and roll stability with various vendor diagnostic programs, as well as Lite Check Inspector 920

  • Peterbilt equipment with ESA program

  • Drum and disc brakes

  • Wheel ends, hubs, bearings, and wheel seals

  • Tire, wheel, and alignment

  • Emergency shut offs/passive shutdowns with Base System and Smart Hose

  • Pumps and compressors with Blackmere Systems, Banjo, and IR

  • Internal valves, global valves, relief valves and plumbing

  • Samsara truck and trailer tracking

  • Suspensions for air ride and spring ride

  • Must have knowledge of the operation/function, maintenance, and repair of the above.

  • *Performs / Oversees the following:

  • Building of hoses.

  • Utilization of maintenance and inventory software to create purchase orders, track time on work performed, obtain instructions on work to be performed, parts used, and meter entered, as well as complete work pending.

  • Maintenance of records in maintenance and inventory software of repair and maintenance of equipment, machinery, facilities, and vehicles to meet OSHA and DOT standards and guidelines.

  • *Preparation of hazardous material tanks for a change in product in compliance with hazardous materials guidelines.

  • Attend Company and industry-related meetings, as required.

  • Establish individual goals which are aligned with the Company's business strategies and objectives.

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

  • Will be responsible to develop equipment vendor relationships in order to properly maintain our equipment in the most cost-effective manner.

  • Works directly with operations on maintaining the right equipment mix in the right market. Improved utilization of the asset is a key metric of this position's performance.

STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE

  • Timely completion of specified maintenance on vehicles and tanks.

  • High degree of attention to detail.

  • Continual awareness and concern for vehicle and driver safety.

  • Accurate, complete, and timely entry of data in maintenance and inventory software.

  • Adherence to OSHA and DOT standards for vehicle maintenance and handling of hazardous materials, including compliant documentation and records.

  • Acceptable or above inspection results for vehicles on which maintenance has been performed.

  • Maintenance of Company information in a confidential manner.

  • Must be available after-hours to support the needs of the operation.

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to bend, push, pull, reach, kneel, squat, grip and climb consistently.

  • Ability to remain reclined on concrete surface for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 100 lbs. at a time on a regular basis.

  • Ability to grip and torque variety of tools on a regular basis.

  • Ability to maintain extended visual attention, including depth perception.

  • Confined space entry into portal of up to 18" required for tank inspection and repair.

  • Ability to tolerate strong chemical smells, such as ammonia, nitric acid, and others.

  • Consistent visual focus on components of vehicles and equipment.

  • Ability to supervise others and effectively critique the work of other employees.

  • Ability to analyze the effectiveness of operations.

  • Understanding of vehicle systems, mechanics, and technology sufficiently to authorize repairs and accurately evaluate the work of employees involved in maintenance and repairs.

  • Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and rules relevant to the maintenance department.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND CONDITIONS

  • The working environment is primarily in a vehicle maintenance shop and surrounding area where vehicles are parked.

  • Exposure to various chemicals, hazardous materials, and associated fumes.

  • Dust, dirt, grease and other by products of vehicle maintenance.

  • Caution necessary when using wide variety of tools, including but not limited to welding and torching equipment.

  • Travel to perform preventive Maintenance is required as well as safety meetings and other events.

EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS

  • Computer and peripherals.

  • Small hand tools, including but not limited to driver impacts, band saw, welders, torches, and socket.

Qualifications and Benefits

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent required.

  • A degree in automotive technology or logistics preferred.

  • Successful transportation management experience - ideally including two to three years as a supervisor preferred.

  • CDL, preferably with hazmat endorsement.
