Position Summary

Heavy Equipment Mechanic II:$22.91 - $34.37 Hourly

Under general supervision, performs a variety of unskilled and skilled duties in the maintenance and repair of light duty, medium duty, heavy trailer, truck and road maintenance equipment

Heavy Equipment Mechanic III:$25.21 - $37.80 Hourly

Under limited supervision, performs a variety of highly skilled duties in the maintenance and repair of light-duty, medium-duty, heavy trailer, truck, and road maintenance equipment

Heavy Equipment Mechanic IV:$27.72 - $41.58 Hourly

Under limited supervision, performs lead duties over Heavy Equipment Mechanic staff in the Fleet Department. Performs a variety of highly skilled duties in the maintenance and repair of light duty, medium duty, heavy trailer, truck, and road maintenance equipment. May fill in for supervisor in their absence.

What You Will Do

Heavy Equipment Mechanic II:

  • Performs and directs diagnostics, major and minor repairs and general maintenance on gas hybrid, gasoline and diesel engines and major drive train components transmissions, differentials and drive units.

  • Performs and directs diagnostics, major and minor repairs on emissions systems, cooling systems, fuel systems, electrical circuits, air conditioning systems, air systems and hydraulic systems.

  • Performs safety repairs to comply with DOT regulations including air and hydraulic brake systems, repairs and adjusts lights, aligns front and rear ends; balances tires, adjusts drive lines and repairs damaged vehicle bodies.

  • Maintains necessary records of all work performed using computerized fleet management system.

  • Completes all necessary paperwork related to job assignments and time cards.

  • Performs general in shop repairs of minor system failures including lights, brakes, brake adjustments, air system leaks, two-way radio system installations, cooling system problems and fuel system problems.

  • Makes emergency road calls, which may require wrecker service or special transportation.

  • Rebuilds gasoline and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, single and twin screw rear axles and compressor systems.

  • Performs engineering, layout, fabrication and installation of new equipment or repairs and redesign on existing equipment.

  • Cleans and organizes shop and equipment, changes solvents and disposes of trash and waste as required.

  • Maintains work area, tools and equipment in a clean and safe condition; responsible for reporting unsafe acts or conditions to supervisor.

  • Answers phone and radio calls.

  • Orders and picks up parts.

  • Provides instruction on equipment operation.

  • Makes welding repairs.

  • Performs on-site service and emergency calls

What You Have

Heavy Equipment Mechanic II:

EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Two (2) years or more experience performing mechanical repairs on all heavy-duty vehicles and equipment required.

LICENSE:

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class B Colorado Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Tanker Endorsement within 120 days of hire required.

CERTIFICATE:

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Forklift operator certification within 120 days of hire required.

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification in Medium/Heavy Truck within one (1) year of hire in one (1) or more of the followingrequired: Gasoline Engines, Diesel Engines, Drive Train, Brakes, Suspension and Steering, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Systems, Truck Equipment Installation and Repair, Electrical/Electronic Systems Installation and Repair, and/or Auxiliary/Power Systems Installation and Repair.

  • Note:Similar or related Manufacturer Certification will be considered in lieu of the required ASE Certification.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must successfully pass a background check.

  • Must be able to pass post-job offer physical screening.

  • Must maintain licenses/certifications current.

Heavy Equipment Mechanic IV:

EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalencypreferred.

  • Associate's Degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Repairpreferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Six (6) years or more experience performing mechanical repairs on all heavy-duty vehicles and equipment required.

LICENSE:

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class B Colorado Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Tanker Endorsement required upon hire.

  • Possession of, a valid Colorado Class A CDL with Tanker Endorsementwithin 120 days of hire required.

CERTIFICATE:

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, Preventative Maintenance Inspection (PMI) Certificationrequired upon hire.

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Forklift operator certification within 120 days of hire required.

  • Possession of, four(4) or more current Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications in Medium/Heavy Truck required upon hire in:
