Glimpse of the Job

The Student Development Specialist III - Fitness & Wellness is part of the Fitness and Wellness Team that is responsible for the coordination, management, and supervision of the Group Fitness instructor staff, all Fitness & Wellness events, and collaborations, as well as developing new initiatives for fitness programming.

Salary Range: $59,512.50 - $62,000 annually (commensurate to selected hire's experience)

Position Details: Employee will supervise (40) Group Fitness Instructors and (2) Task Workers. The position is an exempt level position with a standard work schedule of 40 hours during core business hours Monday through Friday. The position requires frequent weekend and evening hours for events, outreach, fundraising, and stewardship activities. May require occasional physical exertion such as long periods of standing, recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, lifting, moving, and/or similar activities.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Five years' experience in student affairs work or related specialty area with a bachelor's degree

  • Three years' experience in student affairs work or related specialty area with a master's degree

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Group fitness instructor certification through an organization accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA)

  • Examples of organizations meeting this qualification include ACE (American Council on Exercise), AFAA (Athletics and Fitness Association of America), ACSM (American Council of Sports Medicine), NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine)

  • Current CPR certification

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand

  • Ability to sit for majority of shift

  • Ability to lift heavy objects above the waist

  • Ability to reach overhead

  • Ability to carry heavy objects

  • Ability to push/pull heavy objects

  • Ability to sustain moderate to high cardiovascular exercise for classes

  • Ability to swim

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in health & kinesiology, health education, recreation, education, student affairs, business, or related field

  • Holistic fitness and wellness programming and collaboration experience, special event management, student/faculty staff management and supervision, health/wellness coaching program experience, and related extra-curricular experience and/or student development experiences

  • Health/Wellness Coaching experience and Fitness and Wellness program management experience

  • Personal trainer certification

  • Aquatic Exercise Association certification

  • Yoga instructor certification

  • Indoor cycling instructor certification

  • Certified Health Coach

  • Certified Health Education Specialist

Essential Duties/Tasks:

  • Group Fitness Instructor Program Administration
  • Oversees all management, and coordination of personnel for the Group Fitness Program, which includes hiring, planning, and implementing new staff training, as well as evaluating, and scheduling staff. Assists with the purchasing of Group Fitness Supplies and equipment, and in the development of new class offerings.
  • Fitness Special Events
  • Oversees, strengthens, and grows all special event programming. Establishes and maintains essential communication channels with educational wellness agencies and departments including but not limited to the TAMU Hullabaloo U first year experience, Residence Life, Health Promotion, University Health Services, The Gardens, Graduate and Professional School, as well as non-educational entities such as the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) and the American Council on Exercise (ACE). This includes the growth, development, and management of assisting in the development of the Hullabaloo U student wellness curriculum. Plans, facilitates, and leads special University programs, arranges for facilities to accommodate programs, and conducts assessment for all program planning. Is directly responsible for the oversight of all fund allocation for our special event budget.
  • Supervision
  • Directly supervises 40 group fitness instructors, assists in the supervision of the Student Assistants for fitness, and assists in developing and managing all administrative and supervisory procedures for these student staff.
  • Staff Wellness Administration
  • Oversees all management and coordination of Rec Sports involvement in the Living Well Program, including communication with Human Resources, hiring and scheduling instructors for classes, events, and leading Rec Sports involvement in wellness activities and events.
  • Staff Development
  • Assists the Fitness & Wellness Director in all Fitness staff marketing, training, events, meetings, conferences, workshops, evaluations, and overall student development to promote a positive and welcoming community to the students of Texas A&M.
  • Departmental Mission Duties
  • Serves on national, university, divisional, and departmental committees as needed. Assists in establishing long and short-term goals regarding the fitness and wellness area for the department. Attends local, state, and national workshops and conferences. Hosts and presents at various workshops. Maintains positive relationships within department, other university departments, community and vendors. Assists other university staff members as requested. Interacts with students, faculty, and staff for the benefit of carrying out the mission of the department. Other duties as assigned.
