The Frederick County Division of Aging and Independence has been providing services and programs to older adults and their families for over 40 years. POSITION DETAILS:

Part-time, non-exempt, non-benefited; 1-10 hours per week, days and hours may vary, 1-12 week program sessions

Instructors will teach a variety of classes, programs, and activities that meet the needs and interests of older adults and adults with disabilities, for the Frederick County Division of Aging and Independence. Classes, programs, and activities may include, but are not limited to: art, general and specific crafts and skills building, current events, dance, fitness, genealogy, health, history, languages, nutrition, music (vocal, instrumental, appreciation), science, technology skills, travel, and theatre. Hourly wage will be determined based upon the credentials of each candidate.

Location, days, time and duration of each class/program/activity will be determined as appropriate. Instruction may be in-person and/or virtual at senior centers in Brunswick, Emmitsburg, Frederick and/or Urbana, virtual senior center, or other locations. Necessary equipment may be provided by Senior Services, the instructor, and/or participants as appropriate. Supervision is received from the Senior Center Supervisor and/or Home & Community Connections director.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create lesson plans and course outlines as appropriate

  • Prepare equipment, supplies, and space/room as needed

  • Assure return and condition of equipment, supplies, and space/room used for the class, program or activity, as needed

  • Compile and maintain records (attendance, reports, etc. as required by the Senior Center/Senior Services)

  • Assure and assist with participant safety

  • Perform other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

The qualifications/requirements, knowledge/skills/abilities and physical requirements or working conditions described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Minimum age of 18 years

  • Experience providing fitness instruction to older adults and/or adults with disabilities

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill of class/program/activity topic

  • Ability to effectively prepare and carry out lesson plans as appropriate

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working/teaching relationships with coworkers and participants, department staff and general public

  • Participate in staff training and orientation as needed

  • Strong and effective spoken and written (English) communication skills in order to conduct classes and perform related record-keeping

  • Ability to effectively lead and supervise older adult participants in a group setting

  • Physical requirements include the ability to actively participate in the class/program/activity as part of the instructional process

  • Ability to provide own transportation as needed

PREFERENCE MAY BE GIVEN FOR:

  • Fluency in American Sign Language, Spanish, and/or other languages

  • Current certification, or a degree in topic related to instruction

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • While working in this position, the employee will be required to perform the essential physical functions of the class/program/activity they are responsible for. Physical requirements may include walking, sitting, lifting up to 20 pounds, reaching, pushing and pull up to 40 pounds, performing repetitive motions

  • While working in this position, the employee is required to constantly work indoors, may work in a noisy environment, and is required to practice safety guidelines
