The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries Entry Commision is recruiting for a Fishery Economist located in Juneau or Anchorage!

What you will be doing:

As a Fishery Economist for the Alaska Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission (CFEC), you will analyze and assess economic data related to all Alaskan fisheries, providing insights into both state and federally managed fisheries by examining the economic impact of policy and management decisions on Alaskans and permit holders. In this role you will draw upon a comprehensive historical data set extending back to 1975. You will gain an in-depth understanding of Alaskan fisheries, including their management and economic implications; conduct detailed assessments of various fisheries, focusing on permit holder earnings and how decisions impact earnings; use high-quality data sets to provide accurate information to decision makers; and work in a collaborative environment with a hybrid schedule. Our organization, mission, and culture:

CFEC works to conserve and maintain the economic health of Alaska's commercial fisheries by permitting commercial fisheries, and, when necessary, limiting the number of participating fishers. The Commission is a quasi-judicial agency that issues permits and vessel licenses to qualified individuals in both limited and open access fisheries. CFEC also provides due process hearings and appeal processes for disputes related to limited entry permits.

Who we are looking for:

We are looking for an individual with the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

• A solid understanding of economic theory, preferably through formal education.

• Ability to independently perform univariate statistical analysis, and with oversight apply theoretical and empirical statistical and economic models.

• Proficiency with SQL, SAS, and R programming language, as well as database structure and function.

• Ability to independently comprehend, interpret, and apply complex written material such as statutes, regulations, fishery management plans, ADFG emergency orders, and/or similar resource material.

• Ability to manage your time and multiple priorities, prioritize deadlines, and maintain flexibility and positivity in response to changing workflows and priorities.

• Ability to build and maintain effective, positive relationships with CFEC employees as well as employees of other agencies such as ADFG.

• Ability to explain commission decisions or policy to people from diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds including those who may disagree with commission decisions or policy.

Special Note:

While no minimum requirements have been established for this position, the following qualifications are strongly preferred:

• Master's degree in a relevant field from an accredited college or university, including Economics, Fisheries Science, Statistics, or Natural Resources.

• At least 2 years of relevant work experience in a fisheries management, fisheries economist, or economic analysis position.
