Position/Project Specifics:

Positions located in Bodega Bay, Santa Rosa, Sausalito, Berkeley/ Emeryville, San Francisco, and Half Moon Bay

  • Full-time hours not guaranteed

Duties Include:

  • Collects commercial fishery data and biological samples at commercial offloading or processing locations using standardized surveying protocols. Collects recreational fishery data and biological samples at public launch ramps and/or docks using standardized surveying protocols. Duties include identification of Pacific salmon to species, collecting fish lengths and biological data, and performing frequent reconnaissance via visual observation, phone call or personal contact to determine fishing effort levels. Sampling occurs weekdays, weekends, and holidays.

  • Collects, transports, or processes salmon snouts and/or heads in addition to biological samples such as scales and tissue samples.

  • Records field data; reviews, edits and submits data, by mail and electronically, to field supervisor in a timely manner.

  • Interacts with and responds to public questions about fishing regulations, fish identification, and other topics while in the field using material provided by the Department.

  • May assist other projects as needed, including collection of other fishery-dependent data.

  • Assists with other project functions as needed, including data entry, data management, data cleanup, and equipment maintenance.

Essential Functions:

  • Participate in survey crews that conduct regional fishery presence/absence research, recreational/commercial fishing surveys, anadromous fish escapement surveys (carcass, redd, trap/weir, snorkel, etc.), or tag detection and mark recovery surveys. Make standardized observations such as species identification, length, weight, behavior, growth, survival, reproductive condition, and/or signs of parasites, diseases or pathogens, fin clips or tags.

  • Collect and organize biological and habitat samples and collections (such as scales, otoliths, ageing structures, other tissues, water quality, etc.).

  • Summarize and input biological or habitat data on field forms, electronic data loggers, and/or desktop computers. May assist with preliminary data summaries and analyses, technical report writing, or database management.

Knowledge Required by the Position:

At the lower end of the range, employees use knowledge of basic arithmetic, reading, writing, and data collection to perform routine or repetitive tasks.

At the upper end of the position range, employees use knowledge of the basic principles and protocols of fish biology to make readings, measurements, and observations; execute tests; collect samples, etc. If complex equipment systems are operated, the employee has the knowledge to perform calibrations or adjustments to achieve desired results.

Physical Demands:

Demands can range from moderate --where there is walking, climbing stairs and ladders, reaching, lifting, bending, and strenuous sweeping-- to rigorous. In the latter case, the incumbent must be able to handle buckets of water or gear weighing up to 50 pounds. Long daily periods of hiking, carrying equipment, swimming, and/or standing may be required.

Work Environment:

A portion of the work is performed in an office setting with adequate lighting, heating and ventilation. The majority is performed in fish processing labs, fish holding areas, and/or in the field. Incumbents may work on narrow, elevated walkways and platforms that are over or adjacent to water. Field work involves exposure to all types of weather, slippery rocks, trails, irregular terrain, insects, poison oak, rough or fast-moving water, or cold water temperatures.

Minimum Qualification Requirements:

A range of experience and education may be presented. At the lower end of the range, candidates must present six months of General Experience* OR one year of education above the high school level that included at least six semester hours in any combination of scientific or technical courses. An equivalent combination of experience and education is also qualifying.

At the upper end of the range, candidates must present one year of Specialized Experience OR a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with a major or at least 24 semester hours of coursework in any combination of scientific or technical courses. An equivalent combination of experience and education is also qualifying.

  • General Experience is (1) any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with biological sciences or the processes of the biological sciences.

Specialized Experience is experience that equips the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the work of the position being filled.

Maintains the integrity of the UL Mark by conducting various product, device, process, system and material inspections at various site and factory locations to ensure that they are produced and marked in compliance with various applicable technical requirements. Assists in the promotion, marketing and selling of new and existing UL services. Works with internal and external customers to resolve technical and administrative issues. Analyses, evaluates, and where necessary, proposes changes to Field Services policies and manuals and Follow-Up Services programs. May participate in review and interpretation of quality assurance programs. Responsibilities * Independently performs safety and non-safety certification inspections and field evaluations in accordance with the required performance standards and requirements. Analyzes and evaluates examination and test results against applicable requirements. Uses technical judgment to determine whether noncompliance variations compromise the continued application of the UL Mark and may determine if alternative is acceptable. May audit customer quality management/assurance programs. * Interprets and analyzes examination and test results against UL requirements, verifying the accuracy of manufacturers' measuring equipment and reviewing production and inspection records. Periodically reviews manufacturers' programs of production, inspection, and shipping to ensure products are produced and marked in compliance with UL requirements. Evaluates and facilitates options for corrective action where variations from UL requirements are noted. Understands construction and test acceptance criteria in FUII and requirements of applicable sections of Standards, FUIIs and/or procedures for "Special Competency" required categories. * Communicates with manufacturers and customers, Authorities Having Jurisdiction and others to conduct non-safety and safety certification inspections. Investigates the misuse of UL Mark. Provides general information on policies and procedures for the varied UL services along with promoting and explaining the benefits of new and existing services. Discusses procedures, test methods, test results, sample selection and variations in products, devices, processes, systems and materials as necessary to resolve problems, implement changes to existing requirements or help develop new requirements. * Provides technical assistance in several product categories and/or inspection methods. * Uses instruments to perform inspections, such as micrometers, voltmeters, ammeters, and other UL supplied equipment. Observes the use of manufacturer's equipment necessary to meet UL requirements. Confirms the proper calibration of manufacturers' measuring equipment and may perform calibration of UL supplied equipment. * Documents examination, variations and test results to appropriate UL forms. Maintains logs for scheduling inspections, time and expenses. Performs various calculations in more than one specific engineering field such as electrical, mechanical, chemical, or fire protection. * Participates in proposing changes to the UL Policy Manuals such as the Field Services Manual. Reviews and submits comments on the new Follow-Up Services programs. Coordinates with other UL staff on conducting the field portion of File Reviews. * Resolves process, management system and possibly engineering issues associated with Variation Notices by analyzing and reporting on the acceptability of the variations. Understands and applies HBSE (Hazardous Based Safety Engineering) principles and concept correctly when necessary during VN handling. * Integrates continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job. * May participate in reviewing the work of other staff. * May participate in reviewing and interpreting quality assurance program requirements to assist in implementation of alternate quality-based inspection programs. * Performs other duties as directed. Qualifications * Minimum 2-year Technical Degree plus generally two years of related experience. Bachelor's Degree and/or a focus in Electrical Engineering or related field strongly preferred * Experience in Field Engineering, Compliance, or Quality Engineering preferred * ASQ certification a plus * General electronics background, and strong mechanical and technical aptitude with the ability to read and interpret schematic diagrams * Ability to cross sell and understand client business needs * Strong written and verbal communications skills, and client-interfacing skills * Strong computer skills * Conflict resolution skills * Ability to travel locally and regionally, and work remotely. Travel requirements are generally for local travel within a set radius of home location.
