Riverside Technology, inc. (Riverside), a leading international engineering and science consulting firm, is in search of a Fisheries Biologist to support NOAAs National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) in Beaufort, NC.

The Position: Successful candidate will work within the Beaufort, NC Laboratory, Fisheries Ecosystems Branch, Southeast Region Headboat Survey (SRHS). This position will operate primarily as administrative support engaged in managing and analyzing fishery dependent data from the recreational headboat fishery in the Southeastern United States from North Carolina to Texas. Data management and analysis will generally focus on headboat fishing industry via SRHS electronic logbook submissions and biological sampling. Administrative support for the SRHS will include tracking data submission of; electronic logbooks, Headboat Activity Reports (HARs), compliance reports, biological data, and biological samples. The Contractor will assist with implementing Quality Control/Quality Assurance (QA/QC) protocols and measures on resulting data. Additionally the incumbent will assist with the administration of special projects and initiatives (i.e., implementation and monitoring procedures of new reporting requirements including pending Hail-out and GPS tracking requirements).

The candidate must be experienced and proficient with SAS and/or R analytical software, Oracle and relational databases to summarize landings and effort estimates, data QA/QC, compliance monitoring and analysis of sensitive data. The candidate will participate with SEDAR process including data compilation, analysis, report writing, travel as needed. Manage weekly random sampling draw for port agents (implementation 2020).

The primary goal of the SRHS is to provide critical high quality data for stock assessments of Federally-managed finfish species in the Southeast Region. It is important that the candidate understands and has experience with relational databases and statistical software and is capable of providing analytical support for data requests and general scientific inquiries. They must also have writing skills for authoring grant proposals and peer-reviewed scientific reports.

This position will primarily:

  • Provide administrative support to manage and analyze fishery dependent data from the recreational headboat fishery in the Southeastern United States from North Carolina to Texas.
  • Assist with QA\QC and analysis of biological samples collected during sampling operations.
  • Use custom data entry applications and advanced database software such as SAS, R, Oracle and Access to summarize data and provide results.
  • Utilize SAS and/or R analytical software, Oracle and relational databases to summarize landings and effort estimates, data QA/QC, compliance monitoring and analysis of sensitive data.
  • Assist the staff in the Fisheries Ecosystems Branch with collection of fishery-dependent and fishery-independent data as necessary.
  • Participate in public outreach efforts.
  • Attend scientific meetings and present scientific results.

Requirements

Essential qualifications:

  • MS Degree in Marine Science or a related field of study or BS Degree in Marine Science or a related field of study plus three (3) years of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of applying basic concepts, principles and methodologies of data management and analysis of fishery data.
  • Experienced and proficient in advanced database software such as SAS, R, Oracle and Access to summarize data, perform statistical analysis and provide results in presentation or report form.
  • Ability to pass a required NOAA background check.

Desirable qualifications:

  • Experience managing and analyzing catch and effort information from recreational fishermen
  • Knowledge of statistical concepts and theory
  • Expertise in data management and analysis
