This is a Part Time Seasonal position
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 located in Gustavus!
The recruitment period for this vacancy has been extended to allow for a larger applicant pool. If you have already applied there is no need to reapply.
What you will be doing
Under general supervision of a biologist, this creel sampling position collects data on the Gustavus sport fishery by interviewing marine boat anglers to obtain detailed information on fishing effort, species specific catch and harvest rates, and the species composition of their catch. In addition, this position collects adipose-clipped king and coho salmon heads implanted with coded-wire tags, and biological information such as lengths, sex, scale collection, and genetics samples from salmon, halibut, lingcod, sablefish, and rockfish. This position requires a working knowledge of the Southeast sport fishery and must be able to accurately communicate regulations and sampling methods with sport anglers and the general public in a positive, professional manner.
Our organization, mission, and culture:
This position supports the Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish's core functions of fisheries management, fisheries research and communication and outreach. Creel sampling positions collect baseline information that is essential for managing the sport fishery in a sustained manner, as well as providing vital information to anglers about sport regulations, management, and species conservation. As the most visible and accessible representative of the Department of Fish and Game in Gustavus, this is a public position that must convey a helpful source of knowledge about state management thus reflecting positively the image of the Department.
Benefits of joining our team:
Candidates hired into this position gain valuable experience working in fisheries biology, assist with the annual data collection that ensures future anglers will continue to have fishing opportunity through on-going management, and learn about the sport fishery in Southeast Alaska. Creel technicians will also learn how to identify fish species important to those fisheries, learn basic fish biology and assist in the conservation of these valued species. Housing is provided.
The working conditions you can expect:
This position samples sport anglers as they return to the docks in the remote port of Gustavus. As marine boat anglers return to port, samplers will collect interview information on their effort, catch, harvest, as well as any biological samples that are required and pertinent to the sampling protocols.
Data collection is sometimes fast-paced, requiring the creel sampler to maintain data integrity and accuracy within the confines of the established sampling procedures. Creel samplers must work independently, developing their own schedule applicable to the fishery in Gustavus; This requires flexibility in their work schedule, and willingness to work unscheduled shifts in order to collect representative data.
Who we are looking for:

Self-starter that has the ability to provide logistical self-support while maintaining detailed inventory of samples and needed sampling gear, supplies and paperwork throughout the season.
Skill and knowledge of identification of fish species important to sport fisheries in the Gustavus area, including photography of sampled species for training and future identifications.
Familiarity with applicable sport-fishing regulations as relates to management and conservation of fish species important to sport anglers and charter operators.
