Job Description and Duties

Do you have a passion for Fish? Would you like to lead a team to meet the goals of a large trout hatchery and contribute to the overall process of healthy fish populations and excellent fishing?

If so, please apply to join our team to produce and supply trout for the nearby lakes and streams! Fish Springs Hatchery, located in Big Pine, CA, is a major producer of trout. This position is required to reside in on-site state-owned housing greatly reducing the overall cost of living.

This position supervises up to 7 employees, is responsible for administering a fingerling, sub and catchable trout program, aerial stocking of fingerling rainbow trout, meeting annual production goals, and ensuring standardized fish culture practices are strictly followed. Hires, trains, supervises, schedules work assignments and evaluates performance for five permanent staff.

Supervises monitoring of water quality parameters and makes adjustments or improvements as needed to achieve and maintain optimal conditions for intensive trout production. Supervises, administers and has overall responsibility for monitoring hatchery water discharge, maintaining compliance with criteria set forth in Waste Water Discharge (NPDES) Permit adopted and enforced by Regional Water Quality Control Board and monitors influent and effluent water, prepares and submits monthly reports. Provides courteous and accurate information to sportsman,local businesses, news media and civic organizations.

Working Conditions

Office working environment and the occasional work outside of the office when necessary and as required. Willingness to work in and around water.

Work in all weather conditions such as wind, rain, extreme heat, cold and direct sunlight. Open and close various types of valves, climb steep banks when necessary. Work near waters with uneven terrain and unpredictable flows.

Climb ladders, operate various types of unusual support equipment used in the operation of the hatchery. Willingness to work throughout the State and at unusual hours; willingness to work on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Work hours: 7:00 a.m. to 4:00p.m.

Assigned days off: Saturdays and Sundays.

Additional Requirement: This position requires the employee to reside in State-Owned Housing at Fish Springs Hatchery.

Special Requirements

Ability to swim at least 50 yards, stay afloat at least five minutes; able to move 40 pounds and do heavy manual labor.

Special Personal Characteristics: Ability to be a strong, independent leader over the Hatchery, as well as a strong communicator.

Outreach and communication with private, public and governmental entities. Act as Senior Hatchery Supervisor in his/her absence.
