This position is located on Cherokee National Forest, Ocoee Ranger District, Benton, TN

The incumbent serves as a fishery biologist in the administration of the fishery habitat and related coordination with other resources.

Provides advice and develops plans related to the protection and management of aquatic resources.

Provides recommendations relating to fishery resource/fish habitat requirements, other management activities.

Leads the design of fish habitat and population monitoring studies and strategies to collect new data required for ensuring habitat and population maintenance.

Analyzes and interprets project and study data and results.

Develops detailed project documents for sale area improvement on fish habitat populations.

Plans, conducts and executes administrative studies including cost/benefit analyses, methods.

Participates or leads budget development and management.

May serves as COR for routine fishery studies and monitoring contracts

Prepares environmental assessments, biological evaluations and environmental impact statements. Prepares technical progress and final reports, presenting results of administrative studies, surveys, and other activities relating to fish habitat management.

Participates on or leads interdisciplinary teams, studies and plans proposed management activities, and coordinates and/or implements approved resource management plans.

Promotes understanding and cooperation between the Forest Service, other Federal
agencies, Tribal, and State wildlife agencies, and special interest groups.

Qualifications


Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement (or date of referral if an Open Continuous announcement) as defined below. For more information on the qualifications for this position, go to:

Degree:Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR

Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a major field of study that included 24 semester hours in course work in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. Related course work generally refers to courses that may be accepted as part of the program major.

OR

Combination of education and experience that included 24 semester hours in course work in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position, AND experience sufficient to demonstrate that I possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform work in the occupation that is comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major in the appropriate field needed to perform the work of the occupation.

In addition to the requirements described above, the following additional education and/or experience are required for the grade(s) specified.

For the GS-05 level: Applicants who meet the basic educational requirements described in the individual occupational requirements are fully qualified for the specified entry grade (generally grade GS-5). No examples of specialized experience are required.

For the GS-7 level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level; OR one full year of graduate level education; OR an appropriate combination of graduate level education and specialized experience; OR Superior Academic Achievement (to determine if you are eligible, go to: The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

Examples of specialized experience are: As a trainee, collecting field data on streams and lakes for preparation of survey reports; preparing reports to record activities; and, keeping current on developments in State fishery projects, State fishing regulations and harvest.

For the GS-9 level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 grade level; OR a master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related; OR an appropriate combination of specialized experience and education (only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level). The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

Examples of specialized experience are: As an advanced trainee, collecting field data on fish habitats and other aquatic resources for preparation of maps and management plans using all types of sampling equipment; classifying habitats and determining stream conditions for fisheries; and, conducting aquatic habitat/fish inventories.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION AND FINGERPRINT CHECK: Selection and retention in this position is contingent on a successfully adjudicated FBI National Criminal History Check (fingerprint check) and a background investigation.
