This position is located at The Dalles Screen Shop in The Dalles, OR.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

As a Fish and Wildlife Technician Senior, you will coordinate and implement the construction, installation, operation and maintenance of fish screens in the East Region. This position serves to:

  • Provide technical assistance to landowners and other agencies concerned with fish protection associated with water diversions.

  • Serve the Oregon public by assisting water users in the Columbia River Basin of the East Region.

  • Assists the Project Leader with the planning, landowner contacts and agreements, construction and administrative details necessary for successful completion of the construction phase of these projects and screens.

  • Devote a significant portion of each construction season overseeing and inspecting various screen construction projects and leasing screens.

  • Perform project operation, maintenance and evaluation duties as provided with screens.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Occasional exposure to adverse weather conditions.

  • Frequent travel, often involving long and odd hours.

  • Maintenance construction work in and around water.

  • Occasional use of trucks and backhoes, frequent use of hand and power tools, including welders.

  • Fish screen fabrication, repair and installation will occasionally require lifting up to 50 pounds of steel.

  • The maintenance and repair of fish screens will occasionally require carrying of tools and supplies up to one half mile at some screen sites.

  • Performs duties independently with minimal supervision.

  • This position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, and does not exceed forty (40) hours in a workweek. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor.

  • This position requires the possession of a Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL), tanker endorsement, and applicants must pass the air brake knowledge and skill test. On your application, be sure to indicate in the Work Experience section if you have a CDL.

    If the selected applicant does not possess a CDL, they are required to obtain this license within six months of hire and must retain it as a condition of continued employment in this position. The department provides a training program for drivers obtain their CDL and will train all new employees how to operate a department Commercial Motor Vehicle. The department does not pay the cost for the CDL however, the department will reimburse employees up to one-hundred dollars ($100) for the CDL examination fees and renewal licensing fees pursuant to the Collective Bargaining Agreement 2021-2023 Letter of Agreement 00.00-19-338.

    The cost of the physical exam would be covered (usual, customary, and reasonable as determined by PEBB Medical Plans) if the employee is enrolled in an eligible PEBB Medical Plan. Pursuant to the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 and Federal Highway Administration regulations, candidates must successfully pass a preemployment controlled substance test before being hired into this position. Additionally, employees required to hold a CDL will be subject to random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up alcohol/controlled substance testing as a condition of employment.

  • This position requires an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Safety Education Card for on-the-job use of quads (Class 1 ATVs) obtained through the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, accessible at the following website: www.rideatvoregon.org/. On your application, be sure to indicate in your job description if you have a card or a copy of your card can be attached. If the selected applicant does not possess this certification, they must obtain it within six months of hire as a condition of continued employment.

CRIMINAL RECORDS/DMV CHECK:

Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Driving is required for all positions.

Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. You are expected to provide the out-of-state certified driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist. Adverse background and/or driving information may disqualify you from further consideration.

Within three days of hire, applicants will be required to complete the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's I-9 form confirming authorization to work in the United States.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Two years and six months of fisheries or wildlife experience; AND an Associate's degree in Fisheries Technology, Aquaculture or Aquarium Science, Wildlife Technology, or Agriculture;

  • OR -

Eighteen months of fisheries experience, care of livestock, agricultural research and experimentation, monitoring game or wildlife, or farming;

  • OR -

A Bachelor's degree in Fisheries, Wildlife Science, or a closely-related Bachelor's degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework AND one year of fisheries or wildlife experience.

REQUESTED SKILLS:

  • Operation and maintenance of vehicles, equipment, and hand and power tools to fabricate, maintain, or repair equipment and structures.

  • Evaluate long term maintenance and repair needs and preparing relevant information.

  • General knowledge of the principles and operation of fish screens and fishways including detailed knowledge of all state and federal criteria.

  • Maintenance and construction which relates to a variety of fish screen and passage components, metal work, form construction and concrete work.

  • Read, interpret, and construct using blueprints or engineered designs.
