The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 located in Homer!   

What you will be doing:

The incumbent will conduct sport angler interviews and collect biological samples from Pacific halibut, rockfish, and lingcod in Lower Cook Inlet Management area. The incumbent will work independently in the Homer harbor and Anchor Point/Deep Creek tractor launches, must be able to effectively communicate with the public, and must be able to identify groundfish species. This position will be funded from mid-May through August, with some opportunity to assist in data editing after the season in early September.

The mission of the Division of Sport Fish is to protect, maintain, and improve Alaska's sport fisheries. The incumbent collects fisheries' dependent data that is used by State, national, and international fisheries management organizations to ensure Alaska's groundfish are managed sustainably.

This position is with the Homer Sport fish management group that oversees the monitoring and management of sport fisheries in the Lower Cook Inlet Management area. We are a cohesive group that includes 3 biologists and up to 10 fish and wildlife technicians that are actively involved with a variety of fisheries including salmon, shellfish, and groundfish.

The working environment you can expect:

The incumbent will be based out of the Homer ADF&G office but will spend their shifts at either the Homer small boat harbor or the Deep Creek or Anchor Point tractor launch sites. The Homer harbor is one of busiest sport fishing ports in Alaska for both charter and nonguided anglers.

Shift timing will be variable, beginning as early as 9 AM or as late as 2 PM. The incumbent will receive 2 consecutive days off each week but will be on a rotating schedule and these will rarely fall on weekends. Housing will not be provided.

Who we are looking for:

  • Strong communication skills: Contacting and interviewing anglers and charter boat captains requires the incumbent to have effective oral and written communication.

  • Ability to be successful with working independently and interacting with a large number of anglers on a daily basis.

  • Biological sampling experience: Identifying and sampling groundfish, salmon, or shellfish for age, weight, sex, and length.

  • Data management experience including collection, proofing, and summarizing using electronic data collectors and computers.

Special Note:

  • Valid Driver's License Required.

  • Possess or be able to obtain a current CPR/First Aid certificate (this can be obtained after becoming employed, at the Department's expense).

  • This Position will require working outdoors, often in inclement weather. The incumbent will commonly need to lift large fish or their carcasses (up to 50 pounds) to collect biological information.

High school graduation or the equivalent.

AND

Six months experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 2.

OR

One year of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher, guide, or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.

Substitutions:

An additional six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory may substitute for the high school graduation or equivalent.

Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries, wildlife, or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of two years of technical laboratory or field experience, involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection.

Special Requirements:

Work may involve exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Positions are seasonal or temporary.

Special Note:

"High school diploma equivalent" means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.

Fields of study comparable to fisheries, wildlife or habitat protection include aquaculture, biology, ichthyology, microbiology, ornithology, and zoology.
