Job Description and Duties

Under the close supervision of the Wildlife Habitat Supervisor II, or his/her designee, the incumbent in this position will be required to work weekends, holidays and odd hours; and must possess and maintain a current valid Driver's License for operation of vehicles in California, and perform the following duties:

  • Assist in processing hunters at waterfowl hunter check stations.

  • Clean and maintain check station building and immediate outside area.

  • Answer public inquiries relating to procedures and regulations.

  • Identify and record type of game harvested, and if needed, take samples and measurements to be submitted for biological studies.

  • Maintain accurate and legible records on appropriate forms and compile reports related to hunter and harvest data.

Working Conditions

This position will work outdoors in all types of weather (hot, cold, and wet), work weekends, and handle game birds. This position requires the incumbent to wear a uniform identifying the employee as CDFW staff on certain occasions.

Special Requirements

  • Must possess a valid California Driver's License.

  • Physical strength and agility; ability to lift 40 pounds; ability to swim 50 yards and stay afloat at least five (5) minutes.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Good writing, communication, and organizational skills.

  • Familiarity with California waterfowl species identification.Comprehension of California Public Hunt Programs and associated regulations.

  • Basic computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.

  • Education equivalent to completion of the 12th grade.

  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including nights and weekends and to wear a uniform.

  • Ability to read and write English and to do simple arithmetic computations.
