Portland Community College is seeking a First Year Mentorship Coordinator for Queer & Trans Student Success who will primarily be located at PCC's Cascade Campus in the heart of North Portland, a historically Black neighborhood with a vibrant and diverse local community. We are seeking a candidate with a strong racial justice lens who has experience centering the needs and voices of QTBIPOC individuals and communities (queer, trans, Black, Indigenous, People of Color). This is a shared position between First Year Experience and the Queer & Trans Student Success Department that will spend 50% of their time engaging first year PCC students with coaching support and 50% of their time coordinating a peer mentorship program centering first year queer, trans, and gender-expansive students through an Academic & Career Pathways framework. The coordinator will report to the Director for Queer & Trans Student Success, and work closely alongside the FYE Coordinator.

First Year Experience (FYE) is an exciting pilot launching Fall Term 2024 that provides support and a sense of belonging to students in their first year at PCC. Staff will provide a broad range of services to students throughout their first year including wayfinding support, engagement with the FYE curriculum, and facilitating student connections to campus-based and community resources. The Queer & Trans Student Success Department includes Queer Resource Centers on each campus providing advocacy, education, leadership development, programming, community space, and retention services for students with marginalized genders and sexualities. The Queer Resource Centers support queer, trans, and gender expansive student populations with an anti-racist and social justice lens.

This position is currently designated "on-site flex" working four days a week onsite and one day remote. The Coordinator will be based out of the Cascade Campus and travel regularly across the PCC Service District. Portland Community College is the largest post-secondary institution in Oregon, serving over 60,000 full-time and part-time students across 4 campuses, 10 centers, and online learning. The successful candidate will possess many, though not necessarily all, of the following.

  • QTBIPOC Expertise: Experience working with, supporting, and advocating for queer, trans, and gender expansive Black, Indigenous, People of Color and people at the intersection of multiple marginalized identities.

  • Coaching & Support: Demonstrated experience with strengths-based, outcome driven case management or coaching.

  • Ability to provide identity-affirming, culturally responsive, and trauma-informed service and support.

  • Student Development & Supervision: Demonstrated expertise in student development, student leadership, and student success theories, showing knowledge and application of culturally relevant research and practices.

  • Familiarity with higher education knowledge, policies, and processes. Experience hiring, training, overseeing, and mentoring student staff.

  • Programming: Demonstrated experience in building and scaling up inclusive and accessible programs, with experience or transferable skills related First Year Experience, Mentorship, or Guided Pathways desired. Ability to establish program outcomes and assessments with a student-centered, culturally responsive approach.

  • Culturally Responsive Collaboration: Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate in a team-oriented environment with an awareness of how cultural background and privilege influence perceptions, values, and practices; shows nuanced understanding of how these perceptions, values, and practices shape one's relationships with students and staff.

  • Operates with an anti-racist and social justice lens.

  • Self-directed and adaptable: Ability to work with 2 teams, manage tasks both collaboratively and independently, and manage projects from inception to completion.

  • Ability to set goals, prioritize, and execute without constant supervision, while also effectively communicating progress, challenges, and proposed solutions with the team and supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered, your application must demonstrate these minimum qualifications. (Experience is calculated based on the start and end dates you provide multiplied by the number of hours per week worked).

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Liberal Arts, Multicultural Studies, Women's Studies, Gender Studies, Social Justice, Sociology, Psychology, or related field.

  • Relevant experience may substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis.

  • One year of experience in a diverse setting coordinating services or programs for the population served in the area of assignment.

Position Grade 3 Starting Salary Expectations $56,139 to $60,139 (Step 3); based on qualifications, experience, and internal equity. Position Grade Salary Range $56139 to $97344 Annual Salary FTE 1 PCC Benefits

PCC offers a tax deferred annuity program and a deferred compensation program where employees may save additional pre-tax dollars for retirement.

Additionally, PCC provides a tuition waiver for you, your spouse/domestic partner, and dependent children under 24 years of age, as well as partial tuition reimbursement for full-time employees at other accredited institutions.

  • Please note: Temporary Academic Professional employees are not eligible for Personal Leave Days, Life Insurance, Long-term Disability, or AD&D Insurance.

Paid Leave: (Pro-rated by FTE for Part-Time Employees)

  • Starts at 13.33 hours of vacation leave per month (additional vacation hours with years of services)
  • 1 day of sick leave per month
  • 12 holidays
  • 3 additional personal leave days per year
